Once upon a time 89.5 WETS was my public radio station – those were the Boone and App State days for me and ETSU was a radio lifeline across the mountains to good sounds akin to what WUNC did with the fabled “Backporch Music.” We went to Johnson City to the ‘Down Home Pickin’ Parlor’ to see good acts too. The Buccaneers visited Boone being both in the old Southern Conference in those days. This ETSU squad comes to Chapel Hill with an 8-3 record on the backs of 60% 2-point shooting and team rebounding. That said, they have no player over 6-8 and haven’t face the height of Carolina so far this season. They also hit 8 treys a game (see Jaylen Smith, Maki Johnson, and Brian Taylor on the long shots) and score at an 80 point clip. Like most mid-majors these days the Bucs are journeymen – Grad Student Cam Morris III is 6-8 and leads with 14.2 ppg. Joining him in the paint is Blake Barkley, also 6-8, and scoring at 12 ppg and leading the rebounders with 4.9 per contest. Guard Brian Taylor hits at a 13 ppg mark and 37% from distance. Watch for 5-11 blur Jaylen Smith who is all over the place.

Frontcourt: Veesaar is smart. Caleb Wilson soars. Brown is brilliant. High is good across the board.

Wings: Jarin Stevenson leads the team in Ritmos, while Powell is tonight’s Einstein. Bogavac is waaay above the fold.

Guards: Evans has good looks physically and his ‘want-to’ is high while Dixon is uber-athletic. Jaydon Young is middlin’.

Overall: The Buccaneers have won 8 of 11 contests but are coming off a heart-breaking loss to Austin Peay. They have truly played no one of note save Dayton (a 71-88 loss). They do run though they would be unwise to do so tonight – another slowdown? Perhaps.

Heels aren’t coming off of exams tonight and may feel a bit stung from the criticism laid out after USCU hung around too long in the eyes of the often harsh Tar Heel ‘faithful.’ Teams like ETSU are increasingly difficult to track down birthdates for so we can’t know where they stand biorhythmically. But what we do know is that Carolina has some Biorhythmic Boosts tonight. This really looks like a highlight reel in the making. Count on ETSU to work to stay out of the ranks of the posterized. Wilson, Stevenson, and Bogavac have phenomenal looks…break-out game for Stevenson or a quiet and efficient Mr. Gadget performance? Heels by 25 (Gamblers say 15).

Shhhhh, spread went up one point in like 30 seconds when I was checking online with my Panamanian bookie.

I’m predicting (OK hoping) that Seth gets five minutes of action tonight to get his feet wet. Looking forward to seeing the Heels in person this Saturday and. I would love the Heels to be in full force.

How to read kenpom. ETSU is about 80 spots ahead of navy and 140 spots ahead of USC-Upstate
ETSU has lost to Presbyterian and Austin Peay. KenPom has Presbyterian 265th and Austin Peay 185th. ETSU has a SOS of 329 out of 365. Thinking KenPom might have ETSU quite overrated. Easy to win when you don't play anybody any good. And lost to two teams who supposedly way worse than ETSU, so not sure what to make of all that.
ETSU takes a lot of 3's and makes about 30% of them, so they will have to shoot a lot better than the norm to keep it close tonight. Maybe they will....

They’re looking pretty good early?
