Grocery prices rose at the fastest pace in three years, keeping pressure on household budgets even as overall inflation held steady in December.

Why it matters: The jump in costs highlights the challenge for the White House in the lead-up to midterm elections. Broad inflation relief is little consolation for Americans if they aren't seeing it reflected in grocery bills.

By the numbers: Grocery prices (or "food at home," as the Bureau of Labor Statistics calls it) rose by 0.7% in December, the largest monthly gain since the peak inflation period in August 2022.

Food inflation was evident at restaurants, too: Costs for dining out (or "food away from home") rose by a similar amount, the largest monthly gain in three years.

honestly, outside of the boomers and older gen-xers, who the hell shops at a department store anymore? The only time in the last 5ish years that I've even stepped foot into one was this past xmas when my GF needed to use the gift card she was given 3 years ago. We bought xmas presents for her young nephew and niece and left.

MAGA voter logic:
“We must lessen China’s influence around the globe! How should we do it? I know, let’s screw over all of our reliable trading partners so they run to China for their needs.”

I know, I know. You don’t support THOSE tariffs. You support the other ones. The good ones. The ones you can’t name or talk intelligently about, but don’t worry, saying you support “some” of the tariffs proves you are a reasonable Trump voter because you don’t blindly support EVERYTHING Trump does. And we all totally buy that rationalization.

Yeah, I'm an old boomer and haven't been inside a department store or a movie theater in years. It's a Netflix and Amazon world I live in 🫤

Fair...I didn't mean to insult, just describing my own experiences. I'm a late gen-xer and the few times I've looked into the Macy's in my local mall while going to some of the smaller shops, pretty much everyone I've seen shopping was far older than me.

I am a boomer-I go to Dept stores a few times a year-always with my GF . Shop for her or the 35-40 year old ladies in my family. We have developed a pretty good tag team approach-divide and conquer\Two things I hate
1. If you want pants you need to go to 6 different Brand sections , each of which have some pants
2. Often, especially Belks,I have no freaking idea what the final price is until I check out. This % off, that % off, more of you use your card. Just put the freaking price on the item PLEEEESE
