I have not seen any analysis on this, so I have no idea if this is a national issue. But in my area, a lot of Boomer CPA's and tax preparers have retired over the past few to several years. There are not nearly aa many grads or younger folks interested in that career. We have a big shortage in my area.

I suspect that you are right, tax prep has seen an exodus. It was once the case that being a CPA was a well paying job. I mean, it's not working for chicken feed, but if you can pass the CPA and CFP tests, you should be able to pass CFA and get into more lucrative investment fields.

But it could also just be Turbo Tax raising its prices.

The end of IRS Direct File may have pushed more people to a paid option.
