I’m not usually a Michelle Goldberg reader but this is a good summary of the whole “grooming gangs” thing if, like me, you have no idea what they’re all talking about. (Gift link)

GIFT LINK —> Opinion | Elon Musk’s Dishonest Demagogy on Grooming Gangs

“…If you’ve been on X in recent days, you might have the impression that there has been some major new development in this awful story.

Musk, the platform’s owner, has been posting about it incessantly, smearing Jess Phillips, the Labour minister overseeing issues of violence against women and girls, as a “rape genocide apologist” and calling for her imprisonment. He’s also called for the jailing of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and urged Britain’s king to dissolve Parliament and call new elections, something the monarch cannot do.

As the world’s richest man and a quasi-official member of Donald Trump’s team, Musk has enormous influence, and his admirers in both the United States and Britain have taken up the cause. Kemi Badenoch, head of the Tories, is demanding a new national investigation, which her party easily could have undertaken when it was in power until last year. Starmer, in turn, was forced to address Musk’s claims on Monday.

In this uproar, we’re seeing a particularly feral right-wing version of an old-fashioned Twitter mob, but with far higher stakes. Musk is using a genuine atrocity to pursue his campaigns against both Starmer, with whom he has a long-running feud over the regulation of social media, and against mass immigration.

The visceral horror of the underlying story — especially to people who are only just discovering it — gives his demagogic attacks a sheen of righteousness.

But much of what’s he’s saying about the current government’s culpability is either distorted or flatly untrue, part of his increasingly vigorous crusade against the world’s remaining liberal leaders. …”

I admit I assumed this was too nuts for him and didn't even bother to check to see if Musk posted this when my husband asked if I had seen it.

Meta taking the Twitter approach to content moderation. Says the fact checkers are politically biased and it has the effect of shutting down unpopular speech.

In a number of sweeping changes that will significantly alter the way that posts, videos and other content are moderated online, Meta will adjust its content review policies on Facebook and Instagram, getting rid of fact checkers and replacing them with user-generated “community notes,” similar to Elon Musk’s X, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday.

I think the Left had a good chance at truth, but they ruined it with their excesses and lost this one just like they lost the common voter and lost the election. Now X is a sewer. Look for more lunacy on Facebook.

If you control the language, you control the story and I think the average person just got tired of forced words like Latinx, or changing master bedrooms to primary bedrooms, man hole covers to person hole covers, heteronormative, BIPOC, etc. Unfortunately, we are going to pay a high price.

You believing that literally any of those terms are why we're where we are is a pretty good indication that truth had no shot.

Put another way- if gas had been $2 a gallon and rent and groceries 20% cheaper than they are now, would "Latinx" or "BIPOC" have handed the election to Trump?

I'm not saying it's the only reason or even the main reason. I think it factored in. We have to be honest about why we lost and not just come up with an ideologically palatable reason or we will lose again unless conditions are perfect.

I'm saying it was a change election, and the things that people want changed aren't esoteric etymologies. Kamala wasn't offering enough change. Trump offered change, but people aren't going to like what he delivers.

Voters wanted change in 2008, 2016 and 2020 and they got it, same as this year. I suspect it will be the same in 2028. Change seems to be the only mandate in this country...

The language stuff seemed more prominent in 2017-2020 and Trump lost.

“…
The project is also realizing Musk’s notion of how government officials should deal with entrepreneurs: avoid lengthy reviews before building and instead impose fines later if anything goes awry. Musk’s views on regulatory power have taken on new significance in light of his close ties to President-elect Donald Trump and his role in a new effort to slash rules in the name of improving efficiency. The Las Vegas project, now well under way, is a case study of the regulatory climate Musk favors.

Because the project, now known as the Vegas Loop, is privately operated and receives no federal funding, it is exempt from the kinds of exhaustive governmental vetting and environmental analyses demanded by the other cities that Boring pitched. Such reviews assess whether a proposal is the best option and inform the public of potential impacts to traffic and the environment. …”

Sort of a put a pin in it story …

Cont’d

“… Meanwhile, Boring has skirted building, environmental and labor regulations, according to records obtained by ProPublica and City Cast Las Vegas under public records laws.

It twice installed tunnels without permits to work on county property. State and local environmental regulators documented it dumping untreated water into storm drains and the sewer system. And, as local politicians were approving an extension of the system, Boring workers were filing complaints with the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration about “ankle-deep” water in the tunnels, muck spills and severe chemical burns. After an investigation, Nevada OSHA in 2023 fined the company more than $112,000. Boring disputed the regulators’ allegations and contested the violations.

The complaints have continued.

“The Boring company is at it again,” an employee of the Clark County Water Reclamation District wrote to the agency’s general manager and legal counsel in June, after video showed water spilling from a company-owned property into the street near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Tyler Fairbanks, a Boring Company manager, emailed the county official, saying “we take this very seriously and we are working to correct what is going on.” In August, a Las Vegas Valley Water District staffer documented a similar issue. On both occasions, the county issued cease-and-desist letters but did not fine Boring.

Last year, Boring requested that the county no longer require it to hold a special permit that, among other things, mandates operators of private amusement and transportation systems to report serious injuries and fatalities, and grants the county additional authority to inspect and regulate their operations to protect public safety.

The result is that key questions about the operation and maintenance of an unproven transportation system are unanswered. The county declined to respond to detailed questions about its oversight role since the special permit ended. It provided a statement saying that Boring is “responsible for the safe operation of its system and retaining a third-party Nevada registered design professional to conduct annual audits of their operations.” The county can review those audits and inspect the system “as deemed appropriate.” …”
