It's wild to think back to when Musk "overpaid" for Twitter just a couple years ago. At the time, no one realized how radicalized and consumed with power and greed Musk had become. Truth be told, you can't put a price on unilateral ownership of humanity's most robust disinformation/propaganda platform if that is one's intended use. Billionaire Goebbels has become one of the most dangerous people on the planet.

I saw a headline today that Musk was about to buy Liverpool soccer club, so maybe he will lose interest in ruining the US.

I think you are giving twitter much more credit than it deserves. That it has no guardrails does not mean that it is particularly influential. Tiktok and Meta are far, far more important platforms.

Culturally? 💯

Politically, closer call.

How many low-information swing voters do you think were influenced by tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp vs. how many were influenced by X? I'd be willing to bet that the former outpaced the latter by 100 times or more. Twitter is not a significant platform in this country and it is getting less significant every day.

Fair points. Still where the political class and political activists communicate globally but in terms of impact on low info voters, I think you are correct.

Fair point as well.

Because the politicians still think X is important, that makes it important (at least more so than its reach would suggest).

I've been wondering something...since Musk is now saying that Twitter has replaced mainstream media...should it be treated as media by the law? I believe Zuck has fought against tooth and nail when it comes to Facebook, and so far the government regulators have agreed.

For the sake of society, computer programs that emulate humans (bots) should be made illegal, and corporations should be liable for their algorithms.

I think Zuck and really all social media platforms don't want to be held liable for what their users post. If you are a newspaper or TV station you have an awful lot of control over what your journalists say or write. You can be held liable because the control is ultimately yours as the owner and publisher. If you are Facebook or Twitter, you can ultimately pull a post or ban a user but its a lot of work and hurts their business model of trying to get new users to sign up and engage. Its also not impossible as you see sites like Craigslist nuke a popular dating section of their site that was also used for prostitution. All sites outside of the dark web police for other illegal activities.

I think there is a reasonable argument to be made that it is possible but maybe not fair to the social media companies or their users.

Oh I get why Zuck and other social media founders fought that tooth and nail.

I'm just wondering if Musk preaching from the mountaintop that X (Twitter) is the new media will change the policy position. Not sure you can have it both ways. Feels like the Euros will be the first ones to take their shot on this issue.
