Tesla still has the best self-driving technology out there
My understanding is that that isn't even close to being true. Even their assisted driving tech has had major failures and is nowhere near what is advertised.

Not even self driving but for a comparison...

And for self driving itself.

Cool article and like every old dad, I love and trust consumer reports but this struck me as weird:

"Tesla’s “Full Self Driving” optional feature, which promises to one day provide assistance in a broad range of situations including urban driving, was not evaluated in these tests."

I'm not a car guy but it seems like full self-driving should have been included in those tests if they are going to evaluate how well Tesla performs compared to other car makers.

Waymo has been offering commercial driverless taxis service for two years. It uses lidar, radar and cameras.

Tesla just uses camera and is nowhere close to real-world self-driving.

How could you claim that Tesla has the best self-driving technology? Tesla is way behind the market.

I made the claim out of ignorance. I really did think Tesla was ahead but nice to know the others are catching up or exceeding.

Yeah, Tesla made a technical decision to only use video instead of also relying on things like lidar, sonar or radar to keep cost low and with all the cars they have on the road right now, it's looking like a bad choice. Hard to retrofit, and video just doesn't seem like enough in edge cases. Maybe they'll get it figured out.

I did try Ford's self driving offering when we were test driving for our last car and I got turned off by the way they priced it. It was something like 50 bucks a month for as long as you own the car which is probably a relatively small fraction of what it would cost to operate a car on a monthly basis but just seemed like a lot. And I just looked up Tesla's version and it's double that so I'm probably just going to have to get used to it.

When people talk about "defund the police" this is the crap they talk about. Spending over $150K on a cybertruck to try to get kids to not do drugs.

That's just standard DARE schtick. Police have been rolling out "cool" DARE vehicles for 40 years. Nothing particularly new or unusual about this. And I seriously doubt this is what motivates defund the police movements. The fact that the Irvine cops are the biggest assholes in the Southern California region would be a far bigger reason to defund the police.

From link above:

“An initiative called Progress 2028 that purports to be Kamala Harris’ liberal counter to the conservative Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 is actually run by a dark money network supporting former President Donald Trump.

Building America’s Future, the dark money group at the helm of the network, has steered money to a constellation of groups and initiatives boosting Trump’s agenda and spreading messaging aimed at chipping away voters from Harris. The dark money group reportedly received over $100 million in funding from billionaire Elon Musk, along with other donors, the New York Times recently reported.

The newest effort to benefit from their largesse is Progress 2028. Building America’s Future registered to use Progress 2028 as a fictitious nameon Sept. 23 and the website was created three days later, OpenSecrets’ analysis of corporate filings and DNS records found. …

Some of the policies listed in Progress 2028 highlight disproven and misleading claims about Harris’ positions. Policies listed include “Empowering Undocumented Immigrants, Building Our Future” and “Expanding Medicaid to Undocumented Immigrants.” …”

“… Progress 2028 has also started pouring money into digital advertising. Since Oct. 11, several digital ads on Facebook and Instagram have included the disclaimer “paid for by Progress 2028” — totaling over $36,000 in ad buys over just five days.

While the ads appear to include pro-Harris messaging, they lean into contentious issues listed on the Progress 2028 site that have created friction among different divisions of the party.

“Let’s remove barriers for undocumented immigrants who are undocumented!” one ad states, adding, “Access to affordable housing, driver licenses, and fair wages creates a stronger America for everyone.”

Another ad reads, “A national, mandatory buy-back program means fewer guns & fewer tragedies. Kamala Harris gets it!” …”
