"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" saw a significant decline in revenue in recent years, particularly in advertising revenue. In 2018, CBS's late-night shows, including "The Late Show," generated $439 million in ad revenue. By 2024, that figure had dropped to $220 million, a 50% decrease, according to CNN and The New York Times.


This isn't a loss. Sounds like that George W Bush fuzzy math. Dropped from 400 to 200 is not a loss, it's a decrease.

And insulting 50% of the US is no way to ruin a country, but you seem happy with the piece of shit you voted for.

^This, all of this. Ask Trumpers to describe their god-king and almost invariably they'll describe a man who doesn't exist and has never existed. Their Donald Trump is a figment of their imaginations, like the tooth fairy or Santa Claus. Yet they cling to that illusion as fiercely as a drowning man trying to hang on to a floating object in the water. And any attempt to show the light to them just causes them to dig even deeper into denial.

It is believed that The Late Show was legitimately losing $40-50mil per year due to the drop in ad revenue.

See, I happen to find the ram to be more humorous than exhausting. This is a man so pathologically weird as to cheer for the defunding of effing Sesame Street, so militantly dunce as to believe that Adolf Hitler was a virulent left winger because his party was called the National Socialist German Worker’s Party, and so devoid of any pride or dignity that he happily brags about both on a message board filled with actually intelligent people.

These shows are VERY expensive to produce. I read The Late Show had 200+ employees.

But Gutfeld is funny. Colbert’s show devolved into an MSNBC liberal screech featuring liberal lawmakers as frequent guests. I mean who wants to watch Adam Schiff after a long day? Gutfeld is more of a social commentator than a liberal hating host.

200 employees times $200,000 per employee is $40 million. I doubt the median salary+benefits is as high as $200K. Granted, the host makes $20-50 million. So, that brings it up to $60-$90 million/year.

I expect that in recent years almost all guests get paid to appear; most guests on the Tonight Show in the Carson Era didn’t get paid (maybe a Sinatra-level star was paid).

I wouldn’t be surprised if the 11:30 pm talk shows lose money.

Gutfeld, is funny to you. As noted is does the same thing that you accuse the Late Show of doing. But since the 50% is liberal, you find it funny.

Yeah, in a few years, the stupids will claim that Donald Trump was a virulent left-winger because his party was called the Make America Great Again Party. Everyone else will know America is truly great when it is diverse, educated, healthy, empathetic, and delivers on the promises of freedom and opportunity for all.

What is interesting is how many magats have created their very own unique version of trump. What I’ve seen is typically projection of some quality they admire or have themselves that is completely absent from reality trump.

Take a meteorologist I was talking to last year. He said that he supported everything trump was doing except the climate stuff, but he was sure trump would come around on that. Once trump poured through all the data he would realize the importance of climate change.

Magats live in their own curated realities.
 
No doubt part of Colbert's cancellation was due to political pressure from the ownership of the network to please Trump so this new merger they want will go through, but I also think, as others have pointed out, that Colbert's cancellation was also due to the rapidly changing television and entertainment landscape. The Late Show has become a dinosaur in that it has a huge and expensive staff but draws relatively low ratings, and in an age where cable and satellite TV is dying and with network cost-cutting shows like Colbert's simply aren't going to survive without major changes to how they're structured. And that also likely applies to Kimmel and even The Tonight Show, although I suspect that NBC would be more unlikely to cancel it given its long history and somewhat higher ratings. But there will likely be substantial staff-cutting even at those shows.

Gutfeld's model works because, as the article posted by heelinhell points out, he has a much smaller staff and much less expensive setup, and because he gets a huge advantage from following Fox's highly-rated primetime lineup of Watters, Hannity, etc. The guy has a large built-in audience that these other late-night talk shows no longer have as local TV news becomes less popular and the traditional TV networks continue to slowly fade from the landscape.

And I also find it amusing reading conservatives who claim that Gutfeld is popular because he's funny. No doubt Fox viewers who love watching Hannity and Watters find him a riot, but I doubt very many people outside that audience do. I mean, this is a guy who less than two weeks ago actually said on Fox's "The Five" what I listed below - and that counts as a pretty good sample of what qualifies as "humor" on his own show. Yeah, he's just a real barrel of laughs, that guy.

"During a debate on the Fox News show, Gutfeld addressed how Maga-supporting conservatives often get branded “Nazis” and he then compared the term to the N-word. “The criticism doesn’t matter to us when you call us Nazis. Nazi this and Nazi that,” Gutfeld said on air. “I’m beginning to think they don’t like us. I’ve said this before. We need to learn from the Blacks. The way they were able to remove the power from the n-word by using it...You know what? I’ve said this before, we need to learn from the blacks. The way they were able to remove the power from the n-word word by using it. So from now on it’s: What up, my Nazi? Hey, what up, my Nazi?"

His audience numbers should be compared to other shows airing at 10 PM. This is just another example of conservatives manipulating the data.

At least this article agrees the show airs in prime time, which guarantees a larger audience than an actual late-night show that airs after the 11 PM local news on broadcast TV. The use of the term “late-night” is based solely on format. Calling Gutfeld a “late-night” show is equivalent to referring to the propaganda broadcast on Fox as “news.”
