I had the good fortune to hear McKinney speak several times. Really was a funny speaker. Once he told a story about Lenny Wirtz, a well-known referee, who when he walked past where McKinney was standing on the sideline, McKinney yelled out to Wirtz, "What the score?" And McKinney claimed the Wirtz replied, "We've got you by four, Bones." Jim Valvano told another great story about Wirtz. Shortly after being hired and before any games were played, Valvano spent a lot of time travelling and recruiting. This was before his family had moved to NC, so he was staying in hotels. Once he came in on a late flight and there wasn't a room to be had in Raleigh. Because Lenny Wirtz was a fellow yankee, he had told Valvano that anytime he needed a place to sleep, he could use the spare bedroom in his house anytime. Valvano drove to where he thought Wirtz lived in North Raleigh and pulled into the driveway. He was getting out of the car when the front porch light came on and an older woman in a bathrobe and pajamas came to the front door. Valvano claimed he yelled up the woman, "Is this where Lenny Wirtz lives?" And then Valvano claimed the woman replied, "Yeah, yeah, just roll him out of the car and he can crawl up from there."
