FBI moves to criminalize Habitat for Humanity, other groups

I'm not sure if reality and some of you necessarily go together. Remember when we had those threads about maga family members going off the deep end and talking about the deep state and Q-Anon were real things? I think a few folks on here are the other side of that coin.
You think a great many things with no connection to reality. It's basically your defining character trait.

Certainly not. I can guess what happened. There were certain grants through the EPA that someone at Habitat's administrative offices applied for. Let's say it was solar panels on roofs or some sort of sustainable wood or whatever. The organization met some of the criteria but not all and whoever was filling out the form said close enough, no one will ever check. And then they signed it right below the section that said it's a federal crime to lie on this application.

And they were probably right for however many years they had been in that office but at some point there were some marching orders from Trump or Bondi or Patel or whoever to say make sure all these organizations cross the t's and dot the i's specifically on these green energy grants.

If that is what happened, is charging them right? I don't know. If it is what happened, they broke the law. They misappropriated taxpayer funds. But habitat for humanity does a heck of a lot of good. Some of these other organizations may or may not be grift shops but I hate to see habitat get caught up in it.
This is giving the Trump admin a laughable benefit of the doubt that it has emphatically illustrated it doesn't deserve. This is the administration that issued an executive order barring a law firm from doing any work with/for the government, and its members from entering government buildings, simply because it represented the Clinton campaign in 2016.
I
It is naked retribution on political enemies. Clear and simple. trying to dress it up with some contorted post-hoc rationalization is laughable.

I definitely agree that there is a political motive to going after the green energy grants. I don't think there's a political motive for going after habitat for humanity.

I get that they're against the Green programs but do you really think maga is against habitat for humanity? Could you imagine how many maga people volunteer for that organization?
First of all, it is irrelevant what "MAGA" is for/against, all that matters is what the admin is for/against.

Second, there is likely no real thought about the individual agencies they're targeting. Someone just said "freeze all the money sent out under this group of grants" without a care in the world for who it went to. Just like DOGE accidentally firing the people who take care of nuclear rockets. There's very little logic behind it.

To me, it's far beyond benefit of the doubt. There is nobody, NOBODY, in this administration that could research the situation to the depth that is supposed in his hypothetical.

As I just said in another post. Habitat for Humanity is just collateral damage. The people who issued these orders didn't know or care who the grants went to. The fact that you think it's feasible that in a chaotic period of less than two months someone did a considered audit of the use of green energy grants and found really meaningful evidence of fraudulent use of money is laughable. You're making up convoluted explanations for something very simple and completely consistent with everything else the admin has been doing.

Yes. I agree with all this. I don't think anybody in the Trump administration says go after these four or five green energy charities and throw habitat for humanity in there so it doesn't look like we're just going after green energy charities. If anybody thought to do that, they would have just gone after the green energy charities and bragged about it on truth social.

I do think the administration would have said to the FBI something along the lines of devote less resources to something like enforcing gun laws and devote more resources to policing whether charities are using Green energy grants in compliance with the law.

The Trump admin has made very clear that it intends to try to claw back money that has already been disbursed under programs it disagrees with politically. Everything else is just window dressing. Why anyone thinks an explanation beyond that is necessary or plausible is beyond me. You think while federal government employees are being fired and demoralized left and right "Big Balls" and the rest of the DOGE crew have been spending time taking a close look at the individual grant applications by non-profits to try to identify inconsistencies? LOL

So you think that in, what, two weeks someone performed a close audit of individual grant applications to identify some reasonable basis to believe fraud occurred? Give me a break. There's no way you're really this gullible.

I don't know. Is it really that unbelievable? If you devote enough resources to combing through the records, you can probably find evidence of an awful lot of charities that have made either mistakes or fraud within a 2-month period. The government has quite a few of the documents that the charities have submitted.

A close audit? No. Probable cause to file to freeze bank accounts? Maybe. I have no idea what the evidentiary standard is to do something like that but I would expect it to be pretty low. Doesn't necessarily mean it will succeed either as we see from the bank's filing.

Trump has been in office for a couple months now. I think shrinking it to 2 weeks is a little unrealistic.

Oh for sure. Like I say, the investigation is definitely politically motivated. The fact that habitat for humanity was one of the charities that the FBI wanted to freeze funds for is unlikely to be politically motivated in my mind.

Have you ever been part of any form of audit or investigation in your life? Whether through accounting firm, consultant, government, etc? There is absolutely no way to do this, in any sort of rational way, in this timeframe. None. At least not with giving any sort of due process to the recipient - like asking it to address some purported inconsistency. Without even getting into the fact that the Trump admin is clearly so busy firing and reassigning a ton of people that the idea that this work could have been assigned, completed, reviewed, etc within a few weeks is absurd.

Do you have even the remotest desire to understand how any of this works? And do you even care that there is a much more obvious and simple explanation, that is entirely consistent with everything else the admin is doing, staring you in the face?

Your last paragraph was rhetorical, I hope

Holy cow.. You're making up unrealistic hypotheticals based on something you admittedly know nothing about, without even attempting to educate yourself at a basic level about it?

I'm shocked gt. Absolutely shocked. This is certainly the first time you've done something like this, for sure.

Trump could go on TV and scream into a camera "I AM ON A POLITICAL WITCH HUNT TO STEAL BACK EVERY CENT EVER SPENT BY THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ON ANYTHING AND I DON'T CARE WHO GETS SCREWED IN THE PROCESS" (not far from what he's already said anyway) and gt would still be like "Hmm, I don't know, seems like this might be something related to enforcement of procurement laws and procedures? Better let it play out"

Okay. You've been pretty clear that there is no possible way that the FBI would be able to uncover substantial evidence in 2 months to file to freeze a bank account. What's your expertise in this area?
