"Filmed in the mountains of North Carolina, this acclaimed documentary revisits the region where English folklorist Cecil Sharp collected British ballads in the early 1900s. The film features Dillard Chandler, who sings with rare intensity and style. Filmmaker John Cohen contrasts the nature of the ballad singers with the presence of the juke box: although the lyrical tradition has changed, the singing style continues."

Early in the film there is a great scene set in an Asheville Honky Tonk (film was made in 1969) that appears to have been located right about where The Thirsty Monk is today. It is a great look into the past -- they are day-drinking in the scene. I include that information since some around here might like to know.

Dillard Chandler is a character lost in time as is his world but it is filled with good music.
