Given my recent health challenges, the state of the education system, and a few other things, I've decided to leave the profession of K-12 education. It was rewarding in a lot of ways, not so rewarding in others, but the $47k a year w/ 3 degrees started to become at odds with life as we know it and me wanting to some day have a family and own a home and all of that.

While severely restricting my options, I would love to see if I could find a career or at least temporary gig trying to fight against the, what I believe, dismantling of everything that makes our country great by the current administration/elected Republicans. I've Googled many times and usually the only things that come up are stuff like ActBlue (PAC for Democrats) or internships.

Anyone have any thoughts? Too specific a target to try and manifest? Covid still wreaking havoc on my brain?

That's a very full field, and getting fuller with all the firings. It would not be a great choice, in my view, for a new career.

I've been working in progressive politics for the last 17 years, currently working at one of the largest voting rights organizations in the country. I've worked on probably 60 different campaigns in that timeframe in over 38 states.

Most people working in this field start as a "field organizer" on a local, state or national campaign. For instance I got started as the field organizer for Granville County for the Obama campaign in 2008. If you are any good and willing to put in the time, within 2-4 years you should be able to advance to managing smaller races (State House, Local Assembly) and within 6 years have the skills to manage at the congressional level. Once at that level you'll have your pick of continuing to work on campaigns, shifting to advocacy, entering consulting among others. If you want to enter this field I recommend being prepared for several things:
  • Jobs are cycle dependent. You will most likely be unemployed after every major election cycle for a period of 5-6 months. Eventually you'll be able to find a non-cycle based job, but those are much more competitive.
  • In the beginning, be prepared to move to where the work is. Not everywhere has an election every year, but if you are willing to follow the work, you'll be able to stay employed and advance MUCH faster. For instance I moved to North Carolina, Virginia, Alaska, Virginia again, North Carolina again, Maryland, Texas and Connecticut in my first 4 years working in this field. I've been based in DC for the last 10 years with a 100% remote position but still travel frequently.
  • These jobs are relationship based. People get hired on the next project because they delivered on the last one. Work your networks.
  • When not working, there are a number of training organizations that you should work with do do skill development. Arena, Democratic GAIN, Emily's List, Run for Something among others all hold bootcamps off cycle for staff
  • Entry level staff probably make in the $40-$50k range and can advance to $70k-$80k within a couple of years. Lots of mid career positions pay in the low to mid six figures.

If you are really serious about making the switch, consider hiring a coach to advise you. I used this service in my last job search and it was very helpful. It is not cheap but IMO was worth it.

Good Luck

Do you have any experience that might overlap with college admissions, academic or career counseling? There is, for now, relatively high demand for those positions and I know some people work fully remotely in those roles.

some good suggestions so far itt.

how about lobbying? i have a friend who got a job as a lobbyist basically right out of college, she's 33 now and still doing it. makes good money and gets to try to help causes/organizations that she believes in.

I have no suggestions-but you have received a few. I would say however-as a person with a van full of educators in my family-I would say I am saddened by the number of great educators that give it up BTW all I know that gave it up had nice subsequent careers
