Flat Earthers

I don't give a rat's rear end about what these dumbasses think, unless it affects me. When they try to affect public policy, I get pissed off. So I do give a rat's rear end about chem trail idiots, antivax idiots, anti-climate change idiots, etc.
Flat earth is unlikely to become predominant enough to have an impact on public policy although at this point I wouldn’t be surprised by anything.

But craziest seem to believe in many of them so you elect a few chem trails crazies and you may end up with some flat earthers.

I'm definitely not the sharpest tool in the drawer. But can someone explain to me what neferious purpose assuming the Earth is spherical serves? When I think of a spherical Earth, everything is so much easier to understand. But when I think of a flat Earth with non-infinite borders nothing makes sense. I don't believe in absolute knowledge. I believe life/sciece/technologies are a series of ever evolving constructs that help us understand what we are seeing and help us understand what comes next. What does a "Flat Earth" theory helps me understand better?

If "Flat Earthism" is just contrarism and a way of thumbing one's nose at all those smarty pants academics who think they are better because, . . ., whatever, I'm OK with that. But that doesn't address the real issue for me - what does the Flat Earth theory bring to the table? To quote "Animal House?" - "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life." And that, in eleven words, is my key problem with the Flat Earth Theory.

I think a lot of what we're seeing right now with all of these crazy (and they are crazy) conspiracy nuts becoming so aggressive and outspoken is that with Trump's rise to power and the way the GOP is going these people feel empowered for the first time ever. For decades all of these conspiracy theorists had properly been relegated to the fringes of society, and often mocked, like the whole John Bircher "putting fluoride in city water is a commie plot to render red-blooded American men sterile" conspiracy theory that was ridiculed in Dr. Strangelove.

But with Trump's rise these people now feel like they're suddenly in the "mainstream" and are riding high and so they're aggressively promoting and pushing all of their wacko conspiracy theories like never before, including even ones that most Trumpers don't subscribe to, like the Flat Earth nonsense. This is a golden age if you're a formerly fringe conspiracy theorist. The actual science and data and facts to support these conspiracy theories hasn't changed, and they're still wacko and utterly unsupported by science and/or medicine, but as we've all seen that doesn't seem to matter anymore in our government or society. You can believe whatever you want to believe and create your own reality.

Flat earthers, YECs, chemtrail idiots, terrain theory advocates/germ theory deniers, anti-vaxxers, plate tectonics deniers, I've run into all of them on FB, some on public news posts, many in the friend lists of people I know, and a handful are people I have known IRL.

Conspiracy theorist, on the left and right, have probably been around since the birth of complex language. What has multiplied their message is not Trump, it is the internet, which allows them to not only find other nuts, but also spread their Looney tune message to unsuspecting people.

It's only on the right where the loonies have gained control of the party.

The internet is the biggest factor but Trump and his political allies winking at, and/or openly endorsing, QAnon stuff is definitely contributing.
