General Health & Fitness - Stay/Get Back in Shape

I don't have an issue with my J-cups, thought i don't remember if I paid to upgrade them, or know if the design has changed over the years.

The one brilliant thing I did (imo at least) was to buy a silver sharpie and color in the numerals on my bumper plates because the ones I bought didn't have them painted. Man does that make a difference when you're grabbing for a plate and you want to be sure you got the right one.

These are what mine look like with the bar perfectly center

I’ll see how they work though, they are probably fine. It would be kind of nice having two pairs

Mine are easily identifiable which is nice. Mainly just glad to be done loading 12+ plates every time I want to go heavy 😂

Broke in the rack today with some embarrassingly light, but deep and slow back squats

Ended up doing 10 sets of 7, with pauses at the bottom of each rep

It's looking like I'll be able to utilize spotter arms in the same position for squat and bench

It's been a long time coming but finally added a proper squat rack + bench and new barbell + weights

Major upgrade from the walmart specials I've been using since I was probably 16-17 years old. Wish I could have went with a full size rack with pullup bar but it wasn't going to fit in the space I needed it

Can't wait to squat. Need to decide on a program to start but thinking fairly intense 2-3x a week. May shelve deadlifting for a while until I get my squat up somewhere close to it
I'm finishing my basement and plan to have weights and cardio equipment. Also a new gym is being built less than a mile from my house.
I really prefer a gym because I like the aerobics classes. And hey maybe I could find a friend with benefits in an aerobics class.

I really wish I liked going to the gym. Much more ideal (and cheaper) than building one

A lot of people enjoy or need the social aspect of it too which I can definitely see

if you get good equipment that lasts a long time it will eventually be cheaper to have built your own home gym.

those gym membership fees add up! i've been a member at my gym for @ 12 years and pay $40 per month (pretty sure its actually gone up but i'm grandfathered in at that rate) which means i've spent nearly 6k in gym membership fees.

i could definitely build myself a great little home gym for 6k. it wouldn't have as many options but it would absolutely get the job done.

for anyone is looking for relatively cheap alternatives to rogue or other expensive brands, titan makes some decent and much more wallet-friendly equipment.

i have one of their adjustable benches, i like it a lot. $260, free and very fast shipping. some assembly required, it took me about 20 minutes. its very solid for the price point.

For me the classes make it easier to get the cardio, I really sort of hate cardio machines.

Gyms are also very different. The YMCA that I used to go to was very family oriented, most of the classes were older adults, but there were some nice looking people.

I did go to a smaller private gym for a year. This is one where all of the women in the classes don't really need the classes. I was typically the only man in the classes, most all of the instructors were smoking hot and most of the women in the classes were smoking hot. At that time I only admired, and wondered why no other men took this opportunity to take the class and meet women. Considering my current status, I'd love to be in a class with smoking hot women now, maybe it could lead to something. Of course it would take a few classes for me to regain some of the needed stamina.

I really cant wait until this new gym opens, I really hope they have a good offering of classes. I need to take some restorative yoga classes to help with my flexibility. A HIIT class to help with my lung capacity. And I'm sure I'll do some weights as it always helps, but I'm not the body builder type and I'm too old for some of it.

I was never that strong anyway, the most I ever benched was around 250 and the most I ever squatted was 405. I mostly went to the gym to maintain my weight and health. And to meet women, before I was married.

Now days I need all of those things again. I'm out of shape, not as strong as I once was, and in a special situation in my marriage.

I was thinking of all the specialized machines that I wish I had access to. All several thousand or significantly more a piece

But yeah, not necessary for most fitness goals and you can definitely put together the essentials for a reasonable price

Titan is the only other brand I looked at. I was shocked to see their equivalent squat stand to what I ordered from Rogue was only $30 less (though I had to pay shipping)

Titan does offer one that is $120 cheaper though and probably functions just as well. 2x3 instead of 3x3 uprights is the only difference

I don't think all their products are made in the US so I'm guessing tariffs drove prices up

I built a budget gym with the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells and bench, a Rogue pull-up bar, a couple kettlebells and some heavy resistance bands. Suits my needs as a wannabe endurance athlete. Also have a Concept2 rower/torture device and more bicycles than any sane person should, so I’m not really saving money, just allocating funds to the parts I like the best 🤪

I made a small change (well, and a decently bigger one, too) that really seems to be helping. For the last couple of weeks, I have been eating bowl of steel cut oatmeal for breakfast - traditionally I didn't eat breakfast at all and then ate a big lunch. I make it savory - a little soy sauce, sambal oelek, and walnuts. I think it is making a difference in my health (it certainly is affecting my eating habits for the better, at least, I eat much less crap during the day). Also seriously cut back on drinking.

Next step is to up my exercise.

I'm 59 and have needed to drop some weight for a while, so I've been working on trying to lose about a pound a week since the start of the summer. Based on the past couple of years, that dominant arthritis gene that's been floating around in my family has definitely been passed onto me, and that makes any kind of heavy lifting a challenge, so I stick to some dumbbells, stretches, bike rides when I can, and walks. The main thing that I've done is tried not to eat everything in the house at each meal. I've balanced things out pretty well and don't try to eat my weight in chips and salsa when we go to our favorite Mexican restaurant. I rarely drink, maybe a beer or a small glass of wine every 2-3 weeks (if that), so not having that vise for sure has helped things. Someone mentioned the $$ spent on gym memberships and using money that to fund your own at home and that makes complete sense to me, so I'm looking at a couple of low cost items that I could get for home instead of keeping our Y membership going. I'm down about 15 pounds now, and have about 5-7 more to go to finally see a 1 as the first number of my weight instead of a 2, so that will be exciting when that happens.
