I suspect they’ve figured out national defense is the only justification that has any chance of getting support although one of our posters seemed more than receptive to resource theft and others here still think he’s among the more reasonable MAGA.

This particular person left the thread a while ago. I think he may be waiting for the White House to settle on an excuse for “taking” Greenland so he can then know exactly what to claim he believes.

this has always been delusional. i say it any time people say "you're better/smarter than this" or something like that to these posters. they are not. assigning reason to any of them is nuts. they are not reasonable.

The crazy thing is that for so many you can’t say “claim they believe” because they are in a cult and will truly believe anything that Trump tells them to believe. It seems insincere to normal rational people until you realize their level of brainwashing.

Not saying that about whoever you wrote about. I probably have that person on super ignore. But in general assuming there is any rational basis to their actions is a mistake.

I would think it would take more than that to "collapse" the dollar but maybe the idea is that it would set off a chain reaction. Or maybe "I would think" is not a sound epistemic basis for making predictions.

Either way, they would have to pair the asset sales with tariffs or they might actually be doing Trump a favor.

You know, in 2005 during a war games Sweden sunk one of our carriers. They used a Stirling engine diesel-electric submarine which we could not detect. We did take possession of some of their subs to learn from them so that vulnerability has probably been closed but the key is that non-USA NATO is not Iraq or Venezuela. If war broke out they will kill a lot of Americans. We may win but it will be at a price we have not experienced since WW2.

Diesel electric subs can turn off everything. Nuclear subs must keep some pumps on all the time to move water in the reactor. So if a diesel electric gets into a good position, shuts down everything, and waits for a carrier to wander by so they can shoot a few torpedoes at it, you cannot detect it with passive sonar. There's nothing to hear.

There are a few downsides. As soon as the torpedoes go out of the tubes, you're very likely not getting away. It's a suicide mission. Diesel electrics also can't stay on station nearly as long as nuclear subs. Good for the Baltics with ports nearby but not really all that great in the Pacific or even the Atlantic. The upside is that they're cheap and not nearly as technically challenging to keep in the water as a nuclear sub.

The fear is that less technologically advanced countries like North Korea or Iran could use them off their coastline. At least that was the fear. After ukraine, the new fear is going to be cheap waterborne drones that can sit in likely places and wait for a carrier to wander by. Carriers may end up being about as useful as battleships in the next war.

He gives a fuck about having the World Cup. He doesn't care one bit about the actual competition. I doubt he's watched a soccer game in his life. He certainly doesn't give a fuck about the spectators' experience. Plus, I have a feeling he's going to try to exclude Brazil's team by not giving them visas.
