“Ever” is a long time, particularly in the realm of post-industrial international politics. We trust, and have been allied, with Germany and Japan and have for decades.
Both were thoroughly defeated and rebuilt from scratch with the rot removed from society. Because of that trust was restored relatively quickly.

Unless that happens here it will be a long time before we are trusted again.

And I see no way for that to happen without significant suffering like the Germans and Japanese faced.

JFC. We have made it very clear to the whole world for generations that if anyone attacked Greenland we would help Denmark defend it with US forces, and Canada would almost certainly do the same. Trump's whole argument here is total bullshit. Both right before and during World War Two we actively helped defend the island with our naval, infantry, and air forces, yet we never just took the island from Denmark. There is no currently no credible security threat to Greenland from either Russia or China, because they know we would help Denmark defend the island. So his whole argument is simply bogus.

Of course. Republicans won't pay for US citizens to have the Scandinavian system, so they definitely won't pay Greenland's citizens to have it. If I lived in Greenland I sure as hell wouldn't want to switch from their healthcare and welfare system to ours.
