Abandoning values because your enemy has done so feels like a shortcut to disaster.
What value would we be abandoning? Me personally, I’ve never made it a habit to invite assholes to my family functions.

The only thing they’d be “abandoning” is historical protocol, but the American citizens don’t seem to have a problem with that since they did the same when they re-elected a felon and rapist to the highest office in the land.

Trump needs to be ostracized, not embraced. Stop normalizing him.

I don’t go out of my way to do it, but I invite assholes to some family functions…just cause they’re part of the family (and I don’t want to risk losing other members of the family from that exclusion).

Pretty sure the protocol for that event is to invite former living Presidents and vice presidents. What would be the grounds for not inviting Trump? Because you don’t like him? Because he’s not a legitimate president? That makes you just as bad as the other side.

Sorry, just doesn’t mesh with my way of handling things.

Jimmy Carter loved the elusive idea of peace. He would hope to get folks working together so yeah I don't think he would ban anyone.

Because he refused to peacefully concede power four years ago, people died as a result, and our 250 year old democracy was pushed to the brink for the first time since the Civil War.

It’s literally the one unforgivable sin a POTUS can commit: Failure to protect our Constitution in order to retain power.

Sorry, that should be an automatic exclusion from the cool kid table. No questions asked.

Bet Carter wouldn't have approved of him being turned away.
Carter was a Christian. Jesus said the two most important commands were love God and love each other, and every other command would take care of itself (my paraphrase!). He also said that if you love him, you should keep his commands. Jimmy Carter did that as well as anyone who walked this earth. So absolutely correct, Carter wouldn't have approved of him being turned away. I really struggle with Jesus' second command when it comes to Trump, that is why I said I wish I was more like Carter in a previous thread. To be honest, I would have wanted is sorry ass kept far away from my funeral or any of my loved ones' funeral. And yes, I probably would not shake his hand.

He might very well have instructed his family not to make anything of it. He was, after all, as legit a Christian as there is.

Well good news for the world, Musk isn't the only billionaire fascist going utterly nuts.

Thiel has always been a bigger bastard than Musk.

They also hate one another. Thiel thinks Musk is a moron and a fraud who cons people rather than invents things, and Musk thinks Thiel is a joyless sociopath who wants to be a king.

So at least they understand each other.

Nice to know the survival of our democracy may depend upon two right-wing egomaniac multibillionaires hating each other so much and becoming so jealous of one another that they cancel each other out and undercut each other with the new administration. What a great political system we currently have here!

‘He is peddling stories’: Bob Woodward denies Republican’s claim he said Biden was corrupt

Washington Post reporter says he never made comments to James Comer published in the congressman’s new book

——
Pretty brazen, even for a liar like James Comer.

Continued

“The Washington Post reporter Bob Woodwardforcefully denied making statements attributed to him by James Comer, the Republican chair of the powerful House oversight committee, in which Woodward supposedly said Joe Biden was financially corrupt.

“The statements attributed to me in what is apparently his book are false,” Woodward said. “I made none of those statements he attributes to me. I repeat none, and not even in a paraphrased form.”

… Woodward said Comer was “peddling stories, conclusions and allegations that just do not check out at all”.

Comer lays out his claims in a book, All the President’s Money: Investigating the Secret Foreign Schemes That Made the Biden Family Rich, which will be published next week. The Guardian obtained a copy.

The book is named in tribute to All the President’s Men, the seminal account of the Watergate scandal that Woodward wrote with Carl Bernstein, with whom he brought down a president, Richard Nixon.

… Riddled with conspiracy theories and discredited witnesses, Comer’s investigation flopped – publicly so in one high-profile hearing when a key witness, the law professor Jonathan Turley, saidevidence against the president fell short of the necessary threshold for impeachment and removal. …”

“…
In his book, Comer claims Woodward spoke about Joe Biden over dinner in February 2023, after Woodward and Robert Costa of CBS – his sometime writing partner, whose surname Comer misspells as “Costas” throughout his account – interviewed Comer for a book about Biden’s presidency.

“Woodward explained that everyone in DC knew that Joe allowed his family to sell access to him, but as far as he was aware, that was not illegal,” Comer writes. “He added that it should be, but it wasn’t. ‘You will have to prove all of Joe Biden’s wrongdoing,’ he said, ‘and you will likely not be able to do that.’”

He also writes that he asked Woodward “what he thought about my investigation. He replied that he thought Biden had obviously worked the system his entire political career, and that his son and both brothers had a troubled financial history. He predicted that my investigation ‘would either be bigger than Watergate or it would end up being a big nothing burger’.”

Comer also says Woodward bragged about Watergate and disparaged the current Washington political press corps.

In an email to the Guardian, Woodward forcefully denied Comer’s version of their conversation and said he had tapes which proved it had never happened. …”

Of course he has tapes.

If Comer were capable of experiencing shame, he would have slinked away after the "star witness" in his failed, politically-motivated investigation of Biden was exposed for doing Russia's bidding and imprisoned for fabricating his testimony. Instead, as Republican pols tend to do, Comer was left unaccountable for his misdeeds and doubled down on bullshit to further enrich himself.
