The woman, Laura — the Border Belt Independent is identifying her by her first name only to protect her privacy — put up signs in her own yard supporting Democrats Kamala Harris and Josh Stein. She figured the signs might stick out in deeply conservative Columbus County in southeastern North Carolina, but she didn’t expect them to become the target of anti-immigration rhetoric.
“If someone was really upset about my signs, they should’ve just come and talked to me about it,” she said. “The idea that you’re going to put up a sign to try and intimidate people is just un-American to me.”
At least two other signs were posted last week along Madison Street, the town’s main drag. One was near the home of Patricia Woodard, secretary of the Columbus County Democratic Party, who also had yard signs supporting Democratic candidates. Another was put near the party’s headquarters.
The homeowners and Democratic officials say they don’t know who placed the signs, which they described as clear attempts to intimidate voters. …”

Where the media fails in situations like this is that after giving Youngkin numerous chances to respond to Trump's quotes, Trapper should respond:
"Governor Youngkin, I've read you these quotes numerous times and you've refused to accept them numerous times. Is that because you are too stupid to comprehend what I am reading you or because you prefer to obviously lie to protect former president Trump?"
Unless Youngkin reverses course and provides a reasonable answer, then:
"Governor Youngkin, unless you are prepared to engage with this interview in an honest way, there is no reason for us to be speaking. I would welcome you back when you are committed to being intellectually- and morally-honest with our viewers. Until then, I wish you well."
And then cut the interview.

The issue with that style of response is the Governor Youngkin's base is either too stupid to understand or too corrupt to care about liberal stuff like objective truth. In MAGA World, objective truth is a concept something akin to a Philosopher's Stone, something that was sought after in times past, but not really something anyone cares about or is even relevant in the present.

The Pub base wouldn't be the target for such a statement because, as you note, they are beyond convincing.
The first target would be independents who are able to be convinced, in order to show them that what is being done by Youngkin is not normal nor a mere political disagreement.
The second target would be to approach the situation truthfully, for no other reason than for the media to do its job and present the situation as clearly and truthfully as possible.

The "too stupid" line always allows them to divert into the poor little victim role, which Youngkin would instantly do. We saw this with many people on the ZZLP, from really ignorant ones to ones like Heel79. Once they take on the victim role, they feel they have won, and will keep attention on that, as you see with the poor little victims on your Mod thread.
