In 1992, Bill Clinton famously could respond to town hall questions with current costs of milk, bread and other staples. George H.W. Bush appeared to have never been to a grocery store before. Mentioning it for no reason.

TRUMP (to Greensboro Trump supporter plea for help with high grocery prices): “… beef we have to get down but we’ve got prices down. Think of this: Energy! She drives drives a car, probably, and her energy prices are way down and energy is so all encompassing, so big, that when energy goes down, everything comes down, everything follows it. And I have energy down to five, six year lows now.”

BAIER: you think grocery prices are coming down from thisss?

TRUNP: yeah I think that, I think they’re coming down but I think they’re down already. I think the biggest problem is Republicans don’t talk about it, they don’t talk about the word ‘affordability’. And the Democrats lie about it”

Notice how McDonald's is now bringing back "value" meals.

Why didn't they do that last year?

They were increasing corporate profits margins so they could use them to offset Trump's tariffs. Their artificial cost increases sure aided the message of inflation Trump was selling and has provided some cushion so far when it comes to price increases. I once would have thought myself paranoid to even think this was a possibility. Yeesh.

As a dedicated bargain shopper, I can tell you that the pie is about a third of the difference and the potatoes and onions another quarter.
