2026 can't be worse than 2025, right?

Having my traditional meal on New Year's Day of pork, black eyed peas and collards. Also, not washing any clothes on the 1st because my grandma said that was washing for the dead.

We also don’t do any laundry for the same reason…haha.

As for the meal, we don’t like collards or black eyes…we do filet, garlic mashed, asparagus, and salad.

I never ate any of the traditional NY Day foods like black eyed peas and collards until after my first marriage when we would go to her parent’s on the 1st of each year.
Those were the worst years of my life financially, so I don’t feel the need to eat them out of superstition.

Do the people here who eat these things do it out of superstition or tradition (maybe a combination)?

For us it is tradition but with the hope it will bring good luck and prosperity in the new year :)

Oh, 2026 could definitely be worse than 2025. Having said that, on the national scene the best we can say of 2025 is that at least it's over and that we are now almost one-quarter of the way through Trump 2.0. Which isn't much, but given how things are nationally I'll take it.
