Have you ever known a murderer?

I briefly met Bill Boychuk, UNC MBA student from Canada, and his wife, a Duke MBA student. I sublet his apartment in Chapel Hill in '95 and we talked a bit while he was moving out and I was moving in. His wife dropped by to help him move. Although from Canada, I recall he had a large Confederate flag on the wall of his room, which seemed a bit odd.

He killed his pregnant wife a few months after I met him, by throwing her off a bridge. Truly awful story.

I knew one indirectly. A coworker in Gastonia had introduced me to some guys at a few parties. Later on one of them was charged in the murder of the bail bondsman in Gastonia back in the '90's. It received a lot of attention because in the briefcase the bondsman had a check from MJ.

On the other side of that, I knew a guy that was murdered. I've told this story before on IC.

I remember it because it could have easily been me.

When delivering pizzas, you have to take the first available delivery when you return to the store. This one evening I returned to the store about 15 minutes before closing and there was one pizza to be delivered. I was supposed to take it, but I had car issues. The other driver came in a couple minutes later and I asked him if he would take it, since my car was having issues. He took the pizza, and I went home. The next day I learned that he had been shot on the delivery. According to the police it was a gang initiation. He never had a chance, it was planned. The person opened the door and shot him. They didn't take his money, so it wasn't a robbery, they planned to kill him. After they killed him, they pulled his body through the house and into the back yard, they then drove his truck around until they were caught.

A quick google returned this:
In 1991, Keith Hilderbrand, a pizza delivery driver, was murdered and robbed in Gastonia, North Carolina. Jimmy Floyd was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison. The victim's daughter expressed disappointment that Floyd was considered for parole.

I played beer golf in 1988 with a group that included Wendell Williamson (friend of a friend), but I wouldn’t say that I knew him.

I sort of asked myself that during my interview with the Lawyer and the social worker.
I recall one day in class, when another student was being disruptive and making jokes, and the soon-to-be murderer said off-hand: "I've eaten bigger things than you for breakfast."

I didn't think much of it at the time... but in hindsight...

That's insane. I drove pizza in college and got held up at gunpoint once. One of the other drivers at my store once made a delivery to an apartment with no doorknob. When he got in front of the door a gun barrel came out of the hole and they said "drop the pizza homes". He did, and left without incident. I was like damn, people commit armed robbery for a $15 pizza?
 
I don't think I have ever "known" any murderers. But, . . ., when I was in the Army in Germany, I attended a Sunday worship group (U/U) that contained a group of civilian teachers who worked at the schools (mostly H. H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden) for the dependent children of GI's. On weekends, some of these teachers would go to German prisons and teach GED/college prep courses to GI's who had been convicted of crimes by German courts. These prisoners/soldiers were looking at a dishonorable discharge and the loss of VA educational benefits once they had served their sentences. So getting some education while still in prison was pretty much their only shot at leading something resembling a life when they got out and were sent back to America. On occasion, I went along with the teachers, as sort of a "bodyguard." At the direction of the person running the program, a psychologist, the teachers were encouraged to get the prisoners/soldiers to talk about what they had done, as part of rehab. The stories these guys told were CHILLING. A common theme: they killed the victim as he was trying to get away. The prisoner's rational was that the victim was only walking away to get a weapon and when he came back it would be to kill. So the prisoner claimed that killing the unarmed man who was walking away was actually self-defense because he (the prisoner) "knew" that murder victim would otherwise come back and kill him. The prisoner would then say something to the effect of "prison is better than a coffin." I don't think I was a very intimidating bodyguard, but maybe it made the teachers feel a little bit safer.

Not a murderer, but I knew a pedo who is now in jail. The dude was a supply chain guy at my company. I only spoke with him a couple of times, but it is odd to think about. He was starting his life with a new condo and a fiancé when I knew him, but he was also targeting underage girls online with some friends and recording sexual encounters. Damn. That is weird.

He was sentenced to 30.5 years in 2018 when he was 36. I can't imagine missing those 30 years of my life; they have been good to me so far. I imagine his 30.5 years would have been good to him - friends, a home, a wife, kids, crisp fall mornings, warm summer nights, carefree vacations in the mountains or at the beach... all of the things that make life rich. Instead, he will spend those 30 years as the lowest of the low in prison. Wow. He got what he deserved.

Once we figured out what he had done it was chilling to know how that he walked our halls hours after doing that. The other guy was older and out of school.
 
Right after I graduated I worked for Triangle Pool and Spa. We replaced the liner and maintained Michael Peterson's pool right up until the morning we showed to find the house inundated with cops. Before that he would come out and we'd talk regularly and was a really nice guy for being murderous SOB.

When I was in eighth grade at Ferndale Middle School in High Point, there was a kid who would come into each class after the the last class bell had rung and announce,"Here I am you lucky people." We would practically fall out of out seats laughing and it would take the teachers several minutes to gain control. At the end of the class, at the bell to dismiss us, he'd start for the door and say, "Here I go, you sad, sad people." Don't remember how long it took for the teachers to put a stop to it, but I never forgot him. Then one summer, years later, I ran into a guy who was also in that class. After we caught up on what we'd been doing after high school graduation, he had joined the army and I had graduated from college and was teaching. Then, I asked him if he remembered the "Here I am you lucky people" kid and he stunned me with that he did indeed remember him and that his mother had sent him an article about this guy. He had been executed for killing three people. OMG! I was truly devastated!

In my time delivering pizza, I got beat up once, robbed once, had a gun pulled on me, had pizzas stolen from my car, and had a woman answer the door completely naked, just to name a few of the interesting things that happened.

When I worked at Taco bell, I was robbed at gun point twice.

I had a coworker at the pizza delivery who made the mistake of leaving his car running in the wrong apartment complex. He saw someone driving off with it and that was the last he saw of that car.

I worked with a guy that was arrested for child porn.

People at work found out and he adamantly denied it. Claimed it was his roommate or something. I believe he was sentenced to 15 years.

Yea, I wouldn't let my kids do that either.

Of course my wife delivered pizzas also and has no stories like these. Most of my really wild ones are from Gastonia. When I delivered in Ga it wasn't as crazy.
