Hurricane recovery officials in N.C. relocated amid report of ‘armed militia,’ email shows

Safety fears are growing as misinformation collides with a large-scale federal recovery effort.

Some FEMA operations paused in North Carolina after reports National Guard troops saw ‘armed militia’ threatening them

"... On Saturday, FEMA workers had to halt their work in Rutherford County due to reports that National Guard troops saw “armed militia” threatening the workers, according to the Washington Post, which cited an email to federal agencies helping with the response, verified by unnamed federal officials. It’s not clear if the threat was credible.

... Some FEMA operations were also paused Sunday in Ashe County, near the borders of Tennessee and Virginia, out of an abundance of caution, Sheriff B. Phil Howell said on Facebook. This included in-person applications for aid in at least two locations “due to threats occurring in some counties,” according to the county’s emergency management office. Those locations reopened Monday, the sheriff and emergency management office announced.

Howell urged residents to “stay calm and steady during our recovery, help folks and please don’t stir the pot.”

FEMA continues to assess potential threats to its staff in impacted areas and the agency is coordinating with local officials on the safety of its employees and will make future adjustments as needed, the spokesperson said. ..."

This is fucking crazy. Remember when the FEMA Blackhawk conspiracy shit was reserved for the furthest corner of the right?

This is mainstream for the Republican Party now. And it’s having dangerous, real world consequences.

Meteorologists Face Harassment and Death Threats Amid Hurricane Disinformation

Weather experts say the spiraling falsehoods, especially claims that the government is creating or controlling storms, have gotten out of hand.

“… Of all the conspiracy theories and disinformation that have circulated, meteorologists say one falsehood that has especially gotten out of hand is the claim that the government is creating or controlling the storms. Forecasters have been harassed for either failing to promote these claims or for disseminating accurate information that counters them.

Matthew Cappucci, a D.C.-based meteorologist for MyRadar and The Washington Post, said he received hundreds of comments and dozens of messages during the storms about how the government had modified the weather and that accused him of helping cover it up. He said that the threats were “exasperating” at a time when he was working around the clock to track the hurricanes.

“Part of me wanted to say, ‘If you don’t trust my warnings, then stay in place,’” he said. “‘Just sit there and see what happens.’”

Dr. Shepherd said that such false claims about outside forces controlling the weather have always existed, recalling how similar assertions emerged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. “The difference is that they were always out there in ‘fringe-world,’ but now I’ve seen them become almost mainstream,” he said. …”

May have missed this in the thread already, but there was an IV Fluid-producing plant that was damaged during the storm. My wife told me this morning that Duke hospital currently only has a 6 day supply left and are currently in the process of making their own. This plant is the only one that supplies IV fluid to the hospital.

Yeah, it's at the northern end of McDowell County and that entire area got crushed. They were in there a couple of days after the storm rebuilding bridges and building a secondary bridge because the main bridge coming into the facility was reduced to 1 lane. They've done a ton of work up there to get folks back into the plant to start the cleanup process. I talked to one guy that worked up there and he told me they had some "product" that was ready to go that hadn't been harmed by the flood, but they were going to be slowly opening lines once they got them cleaned. One thing about this place. I've been in there several times over the years. It's is, and has to be highly sanitary in order to make what they make, and that ain't gonna happen quick.

A friend who is in chemotherapy went today. He typically gets some "extra fluid". I think to keep him hydrated. He was told that he wouldn't be getting it as there is a critical shortage. The plant that supplies 80-90% of the US market is in... Marion.

This video is from almost two weeks ago but it has good on-the-ground footage of Chimney Rock as the guy hiked into what was left of the area a few days after the storm.

Dear Hell. Duke Energy doesnt control dams near Asheville. That dam is not anywhere near Asheville. And people are FUCKING IDIOTS

That’s the Cowans Ford Dam on Lake Norman near where I live. I drove through when they had it wide open and the power of the water was astonishing and I have never seen the river below the dam so far out of its banks. And it did flood downstream in Mountain Island Lake.

But it was planned, announced and understood that they have to do this to protect the nuclear power plant.

Also the elevation there is about 850 feet above sea level. And it is nowhere near Asheville and had nothing to do with flooding there. The water released in this video flowed down from the mountains.

For these North Carolina families, disaster aid may never come

Some in western North Carolina’s sizable and growing Latino population face distinct hurdles getting government aid in the disastrous wake of Hurricane Helene.

Trump in Swannanoa today

“You have to let people know how they’re doing … You’ve obviously seen nothing but uhhh very bad statements about the job that FEMA and this Administration has done …”

“Reporter”?: “… a lot of people here are looking to you to save them and bring them relief and what better way to win the White House in two weeks. I know that you’re happy with early results [but are NC officials doing enough to help people vote]?

Trump: “Well I’m not hearing the good things about the governor here like I’m hearing about the governor in Georgia … I don’t really know the Governor here but I’m not hearing that he’s done a very good job. … And certainly you all hear the same stories we hear that FEMA has done a very poor job. Our FEMA, when we had a problem, we did record uhhhh rescues. The job that we do that FEMA did under the Trump Administration was really incredible but they had spent, in all fairness to FEMA, they had spent hundreds of millions of dollars doing other things, things that I don’t think … they were not supposed to be spending the money on taking in illegal migrants, maybe so they could vote in elections cause a lot of people are saying that’s why they are doing it, I don’t know, I hope that’s not why they’re doing it.

Now they’re saying they don’t have enough money, they need a special vote, a special session and I’m in favor of that but somebody has to get back to why did they spend HUNDREDS of millions on something they were not supposed to be spending it on, Ok.

Yeah that is no reporter asking that question

And they never seem to consider the alternatives. What if no water is released and a dam fails?
