“… The counties in the declaration are Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey Counties as well as the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

As response operations and eligible damages dictate, North Carolina may be able to add additional counties or programs as assessments move forward. This declaration will also provide Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for future efforts to mitigate the impacts of future events. …”

I live in a disaster area!

Hey, me too! Though official confirmation hasn't been necessary since the moment i unscrewed my toilet seat from the bowl and set in on top of a 5 gallon bucket.

We should meet up later and barter ritz crackers and propane.
I know they include all the counties that have any real damage, but at my house I’ve been without power for a grand total of 15 minutes while they completed a repair to the electrical grid (and I wasn’t even home) and my only real issue is I’m affected by the Great Spectrum Internet Outage of 2024.

My thoughts are certainly with those of you who really have been affected by the storm and I hope you get everything fixed as quickly as possible.

Yeah, since I have the ATT fiber I’ve had internet and power, though some significant downed limbs and trees nearby — main impact on me is having my mom and son here indefinitely.

Anyone successfully gotten in touch with anyone from Asheville? Been trying to check in on my friend and his family there.
My friend was able to text me only because someone in his neighborhood had some kind of OnStar satellite link that he was allowed to use.

Damn! Well, at least it isn't your mother-in-law.

I'm anxiously waiting on an update. My parents and brother's family live in Fairview. My grandpa lives in those apartments at RiverRidge, so I am extremely nervous with the Swanannoa river being so close. It is so surreal.
I spoke with both my dad and texted with my brother. My brother doesn't think he'll have power for a month based on the damage in Fairview. I told him that he would be surprised, as there are already loads of linemen there working to get the power back on. Thankfully, both are well equipped with canned food, a generator, and both have a well.

I look forward to getting over there in the coming weeks to help with the clean-up.

Got an aunt, uncle, and cousins who live outside of Forest City/Ellenboro whom nobody has heard from since Thursday. Definitely an uneasy feeling, but my family is assuming the best right now and hopeful that they are just completely without power and cell service.

Scary times. Hoping for the best with your family.

Thank you! Hoping for the best for everyone out there. I have a sinking feeling we don’t even know but a mere fraction of how horrible it actually is in WNC right now.

People I know all thru that area are out of power so that's likely it

I have heard that my cousin and her daughter in the Burnsville area are okay. They have generators and plenty of food and water. They still don't have cell phone service and can't get down off the mountain because roads are washed out. I feel a lot better now knowing that they are alive and well.

There was acutely horrible stuff the last 2 days, no doubt. Now, and going forward, it's mostly about a near-total collapse of utilities because of uncountable downed trees and power lines/poles. Almost nobody has power, and water is a worse problem because so many raw water pump stations got submerged and of course well pumps don't work without juice. The only saving grace is it's neither hot or cold outside.

Most of us will be fine peeing in the backyard and drinking warm beer on the porch and watching the world go by for a week or more. The real problem is the nursing homes, residential facilities, jails, etc. They don't have water either. My county jail is talking about transporting inmates lock stock and barrel to the east.

Hospitals are, so far, trucking in water to function. Not sure for how long that is sustainable.
