I appear to be in the market for a new washer and dryer.

Does anyone here own a ventless dryer? If so, what is your opinion?

Also, anyone have a set that they highly recommend?

Q1: No
Q2: n/a
Q3: I purchased my first washer/dryer set about 40 years ago. The only lessons I have learned in those 40+ years are:
(a) Wait for a sale from a major retailer on a brand name appliance.
(b) Be skeptical of bells and whistles, i.e., don't pay extra for features you will never use.
(c) Based on limited experience (visiting my brother) a combination washer and dryer is not a particularly good idea unless you are really cramped for space. A washer and dryer in the same machine seems like it takes forever for one load. If you want to do a couple of loads in a row, using a combo washer/driver will be an all-day job. If you are a one load every couple of days type of person and have really limited space, then a combo washer/dryer might be a good idea.
(d) No washer or dryer sold in America today is going to last as long as the first one you bought or the ones you remember your parents having. Side note: My first washer and dryer were purchased at Sears. When I finally replaced them, the guys who delivered the new ones and took away the old ones asked if I had inherited the old ones (the Sears machines) from my parents.
ETA: We recently purchased a refrigerator from a major retailor. A couple of days after it was delivered and installed, my wife noticed a scratch on the side near the top. The major retailor sent us a check for $200.

Yes, I'm looking for a separate washer and dryer. My current set is 11 years old and the dryer belt broke. I've had to repair this dryer at least 4 times. Cheap plastic parts where metal and bearings should be are the cause.

Just reading this morning and noticed the ventless dryers. After more reading, it's not going to work for me. The slower dry time is the main factor. I did like the lower energy cost.

I've had front and top loader washers. Both had benefits but I like the top loader.

The older you get and the worse your back, the more appealing front loaders are. Pulling tangled clothes out of the bottom of a top loader seems a little tougher. That's about the only real difference to me.

I have a GE Profile combo washer/dryer. It is ventless, and takes up less floor space because it's a 2 in 1 unit. If you have a large fam and need to have a load going in the wash and another load in the dryer, this isn't for you. But if you want to be able to put in a load, and not worry about it until it is done drying, this is a miracle. No more switching wet clothes into the dryer. The ventless operation means no janky steam coming out of your house. It takes some getting used to. You have to clean the vent every time, but you should be doing that with any dryer. And it dries slower than a "normal" dryer, but it also takes MUCH better care of your clothes because of the slower tumble and lower temps. I love it.

I got a GE washer and dryer when I got my own place after college in 1992. Both lasted about 20 years. The dryer went first so I replaced it with Maytag in the early 2010s. The dryer went soon after and I replaced it with Samsung. The Samsung SUCKED. It lasted, I dunno, maybe five years. I had to make two repairs during that time. I replace it with Maytag. So far, so good with Maytag - it has been about 10-15 years(?). We dont need anything fancy. We only use about three settings on the washer and two on the dryer. Don't over complicate. Simple and reliable worked for us.

TLDR:
> GE was good in the 90's. Don't know about now.
> Samsung sucks.

Outside of a space where a vent is not possible, what would be the benefit of a ventless dryer? Does it increase the humidity inside the house?

We have a Samsung washer (front loader) and dryer that we bought 18 years ago. It’s still going strong and we’ve never had a minute of problems with either unit.

Wow. I had a top loader that sucked. Glad yours worked out.

Steer clear of Samsung and LG. Both make great electronics but their appliances have well-documented reliability issues.

We have a Samsung duo that we've had absolutely no trouble with either in the first 7 years of owning. Washer is top load, I'm not a fan of front load washers.

I have a ventless dryer. What would you like to know?
Do you like it? Does it work well for you?

Honestly, at this point I've read a lot about them, so it's more how people feel about them.

My primary question was how well they dried. From what I've read they dry well but are slower than a conventional dryer.

It's an interesting how they work.

Do you have yours drain to the same drain as the washer? Or do you empty it?

My current ones are Samsung.

The first repair I had to replace the drive belt tensioner. It was a cheap plastic part that spun on a metal shaft. It had actually melted. I replaced it with one that had an actual bearing instead of just riding directly on the shaft. Since then I've had to replace the heating element.

From what I read the operational cost is much less. They also condense the humidity into a liquid and pump it out of the washer drain.

We like it. We have it drain with the washer.

You are correct about taking longer. A typical drying cycle is 1:44. No evidence to back this up, but I think it’s gentler on clothes.

Ours was a size issue, not a vent issue. We’re in a condo and needed a small European size washer/dryer. The only smaller dryers we found the ventless.

But your point is valid. I don’t know if we would have done it if the situation hasn’t dictated its necessity.

Having said that, I’d have no problem getting another one
