Home appliances

Outside of a space where a vent is not possible, what would be the benefit of a ventless dryer? Does it increase the humidity inside the house?
No appreciable difference in humidity in my experience. Gentler on clothes. But nobody should be using high heat settings on a dryer anyway, imo.

On a related note, I recently read a "laundry expert" who recommended only washing clothes on express cycle. He said that was enough for almost every case. Might have been a NYT Wirecutter article, but I'm not going to look for it again.

I've bought Maytag for many years. Satisfied on the whole. They're owned by Whirlpool now so I'm not there's much difference between the two. I'm intrigued by Speed Queen. Industrial grade without the bells and whistles. Not sure I need appliances that are that expensive that are built to last 25 years, given my age.

I'm with you. This kind of thinking is now creeping into my decision-making process about upcoming dental procedures.

Gosh, dental procedures are insane. My mom is mid 70's and she must spend $10k yearly on procedures to try to hang on to her teeth which are brittle and Crack easily.

I had zero preventative dental care as a child and have spent my adult life investing a lot of money in my mouth. Now some of those old root canals/crowns/bridges are reaching the end of their life span and need replacement. Somehow the dentist’s explanation of how replacing these things with implants, which will last substantially longer, doesn’t have the intended impact at my age.

I grew up the same way and would have had similar problems. However, as a result of my cancer, all my teeth had to be removed by a dental surgeon to make sure everything was gone before they started radiation along my jawline. No more problems with my teeth. Made it easy to choose to go with dentures as well. Nobody would really suggest implants after 35 radiation treatments.

If we ever meet IRL, please don't say anything about this to my wife. I can GUARANTEE that upon hearing this, she would exclaim, "WHAT have I been TELLING you for DECADES!"

Bone can't support them? Or what's the reason?

Possible bone damage and things in that area don't always heal well. For example, the hole from my trach, instead of closing by itself in a week or so, had to be surgically repaired. It took some time to find an ENT surgeon to do that. Finally found one at the Lineberger Center who does a lot of surgical repairs on irradiated tissue. Stitching can be the issue because of scarring and changes in skin texture. I avoided most all that stuff. Had a bunch of internal scarring between the radiation and size of the tumor and talk like I'm gargling gravel but that's pretty good and pretty lucky from where I was.

I wash everything on the express cycles, other than towels.

I also never completely dry anything that I hang up. And only use high heat on towels or sheets.

My brother has meth teeth.

His doctor gave him a ungodly high quote for the implants.

So, a few months back I had purchased a rebuild kit for the dryer, but never got around to installing it.

Tonight it got installed. Under two hours. New belt, net tensioner, new rollers. Also while apart I vacuumed the 40 lbs of lint inside the dryer.

Works as good as new now. But we may still end up getting a better unit. After using the neighbor's and my mothers, the one we have really doesn't do that great a job, washing or drying now.

My parents would take us to the local community college where they had a dental hygienist training program and get cheap cleanings.

Most were probably average or subpar, but I recall one where the girl cleaned my teeth better than anyone in my lifetime. They were being graded and she got an A. Seriously, the teacher checked out my mouth and gave her an A.

If I had the money, I would have implants to replace all of my teeth. I hate my teeth.
Of course I'd also buy a new washer and dryer. 😁

That shit’s expensive just for the components.
Tell me! I’m in the process of having a single implant installed following the failure of a crowned tooth with a prior root canal which fractured below the gum line and became infected. Counting the oral surgery to remove the old tooth, treat the infection plus perform the bone graft that I needed to have enough bone to support the implant, then the actual implantation, and the new crown to be fitted on the implant, I will have ~$6000 in that one tooth. All on top of what I spent years back on the original root canal and crown which is now gone. Dental insurance has reimbursed me a little over $800 so far.

Dental insurance is a lie. A terrible, terrible lie.

I lost 2 lower front teeth about 4 years ago after battling to keep them forever. My gums below those 2 receeded because I apparently needed surgery my whole life to stop my lower lip from pulling it...eventually the teeth had to go. I went with a 2 tooth partial that literally nobody can tell I have. I was self.conscious about it for about a month. Never think about it now and it is a perfect match for my real teeth. The difference in cost between that and implants was a car...a pretty nice car.
