Horror movie thread (it’s that time of year)

I decided to watch the original Nightmare On Elm Street this past weekend. I know I've seen bits and pieces, but not sure I've ever watched it straight through. It was pretty bad. Bad 80s acting, non-sensical writing, fairly anti-climactic ending (though the little "twist" at the very end was kinda fun).
We said the same thing when we recently watched it. I guess you have to consider the time period.

Same with poltergeist.

To me the best horror franchise that holds up is Halloween. 1 and 2 are classics and 4 isn’t 2 bad. Quality in the later films is ok for slasher sequels definitely not bottom of the barrel.

The rest of the 80’s stuff is pretty rough. The first 4 Friday the 13th’s are alright but not masterpieces. And the NOES are just a big joke. I will say part 2 is interesting for the homoerotic undertones.

I first watched Poltergeist when I was 7. The scene that freaked me out more than anything was the scene where the paranormal investigator was raiding the fridge and the meat started crawling on the counter and then bursts open, and he drops the chicken leg he was eating from his mouth and it’s crawling with maggots. I didn’t even get to the point where the dude starts peeling his face off.
I remember when I was in high school a teacher showed Poltergeist on a VCR player and every student (including me) kept coming up with excuses to try and go to that teacher's classroom. Good times.

It's hokey but I had a crush on Heather Langenkamp back in the day and that was the main draw for me with that film.

My favorite horror film is still the original Halloween - I love the soundtrack, the eerie, creepy atmosphere of the entire movie, and both Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis give great performances. Another early John Carpenter horror gem is The Fog, which is probably the best thing Adrienne Barbeau has ever done. She was perfect for her role as DJ Stevie Wayne at the local radio station. And it had another memorable John Carpenter musical score.

For me the old “To kill a Mockingbird” was my first horror movie. I still remember that Robert Duvall was the scary/savior character Boo Radley who I have never stopped watching anything he’s ever done!

The original Halloween is my favorite, too. They really had potential with the latest trilogy. The first one was good and then it went downhill with the next two.
