Hot Stove: UNC Basketball

Yes, Elliot was shown the door, too.
So Hubert gave both Love and EC enough rope to hang themselves (let ‘em shoot too much, let ‘em get away with WAYYY TOO MANY turnovers - for a starting D1 point guard) only to put the hangman’s noose on ‘em at the end of their final seasons in Carolina Blue? And then pulled the lever on the trap door. Dang that’s cold. If Hubert is guilty of all of that, in both instances, then I am now, officially on the “Hubert’s gotta go” band wagon. Fire Hubert! Is there a website with that name yet?

And I’ll reiterate, that is a much worse “look” for other potential recruits than just a couple of players hitting the portal for more money or whatever. A much worse look.

You think they'd both be here if he didn't play them?

This has no impact on the look for potential recruits. Jeremy Roach was Scheyer's single holdover player his first year, and Scheyer told him to move on last year. It hasn't affected Duke's recruiting one whit. If you want recruits, you need a path to winning and $$$$. It's a cold business and, in reality, it always has been.

Most portal players don't care very much about the reasons why other people left. If you look around, you'll see that almost every big time program loses players (often very good players) every year -- and yet those programs always restock. If the money and opportunity is a good fit, talented players will come.

It's funny...every person I talk to (with varying levels of insight) picks different assistants to stay or leave. Pat was well regarded in NBA circles. Frederick is considered the administrator...the one who keeps the rain running on time (the old Bill Guthridge role). May seems to have connected with some families as a recruiter. Not sure what Leno's strength is...not saying he doesn't have one, just don't know. I was able to watch a practice last fall...got very specific instructions not to post anything about that practice (ironically went to a few other ACC schools and dint get that instruction...they even allowed me to take video clips for my personal use).
What I like about Lebo is that he gets in their faces just as much as he encourages, smiles and laughs with them, etc. He was tough as nails as a player and he’s the one assistant who, to my eye, seems to have maintained that level of intensity as a coach. Paige is extremely likable and young and is always going to bond well on the recruiting trail.

Good point about Frederick, there’s certainly use for that role.

So maybe it’s May and Sullivan as my odd men out. Neither of them seems overly engaged all that often. Which really surprises me about Big Sean.

What I see is a huge need to bring in younger and/or more urban guys. Blacker, I guess. I always respected Carrawell’s toughness at dook, and that’s the role he plays on their staff — giving them some street cred and connecting better with recruits than your average preppy dookie alum. Because you can have Sullivan rocking the latest limited release J’s all you want… but it just doesn’t give that same vibe. And that matters in this generation like never before.

Hubert is already as nice and godly as they come. Balance things out with some fierce dogs on the staff to help land these guys and then toughen them up.

I’ll agree with that. I was speaking to another poster who mentioned it was a bad look for “recruiting” and I assumed they were talking about recruiting HS kids, not out bidding other schools for portal players.

That said, maybe I’m being to harsh on Hubert. Maybe give Hubert credit for giving his guys every single opportunity- and then some - to improve, to play their way out of their slump, to find themselves (eventually hopefully) and to stick by them through thick and thin. And then, at the end of it all, Hubert sits them down on Monday after the last game, and they have a heart to heart.

Hubert: “Kid, I gave you everything you needed and wanted. PT, more PT. Let you start when perhaps I shouldn’t have. Gave you every opportunity. I even showed you the tricks of the trade I used to be successful in college and in the pros. But here we are. People are calling for my head. I’m supposedly on the hot seat. If we do it all again next year, will anything change, do you think? What do you think kid? Maybe let’s call it a day now, and we can both move on, to hopefully greener pastures the both of us? I’ve got another kid coming in. I can use my connections to help find you a better fit at another school. What do you think? We can even help you write your farewell letter to post on your socials? What say you? Chin up son.”

Kid: “WTF?”

I don't think I will miss EC too much. If he's really successful elsewhere, then good for him. I don't think he's going to thrive here.

There's a lot to like about his game, but a PG simply cannot be a non-shooter AND a turnover machine. His 2:1 assist turnover ratio (almost exactly) is basically breakeven. So he's not actually helping the team with his playmaking, and he shoots 44% from the field. We weren't bad this year despite EC. He was one of the reasons we were bad.

His overall numbers aren’t bad. His biggest issue is his inconsistency, and his second biggest issue is being foul prone.

If he can consistently play like he did against San Diego State, he will be an all American. But it is up to him to put in the work to become a more consistent player and defender.

There's nothing sad about acknowledging the singular nature of beating K in his last game in Cameron, as an underdog, when he was surrounded by his sycophants.

There's nothing sad about appreciating a former player's cold-blooded murder of K in the only meeting between the teams in the history of the NCAA tourney.

These are perpetual gold and worth celebrating on every topic on this forum, no matter what's happening elsewhere in the world.
No potential recruit is looking back and remembering UNC beating d00k and K in his last home game and then in his last game. No potential recruit is remembering Caleb Love vs. d00k. I have to think and figure out, “Which year was that?”

The Magic v. Bird game is remembered because it was a title game between two all-time greats.

We remember the ‘82 title game because UNC won it. Ditto for ‘93, ‘05, ‘09, and ‘17.

We remember UCONN beating d00k in the “Take him Trajan” game because that was funny.

The wins over d00k and K in his last season are like memories of kissing that pretty girl in junior high school - fond memories; but, no one else recalls it.

I’m sure the dookies on this board would like to forget about it hahaha.

But your probably right, todays kids don’t even know who that jumpman is on their uni’s. They prolly think it’s Jerry West. 🥸😎😜

Put it this way. On offense he's like Kendall Marshall. Except KM's sophomore year, no fans were ever calling for him to see less playing time.
