Hot Stove: UNC Basketball

Most portal players don't care very much about the reasons why other people left. If you look around, you'll see that almost every big time program loses players (often very good players) every year -- and yet those programs always restock. If the money and opportunity is a good fit, talented players will come.
What’s going to be tough for HD/staff to overcome in order to sign players is their, to date, inability to get players significantly better. They simply haven’t developed anyone. It’s going to be hard to convince an agent to trust them in that regard.

That will be an issue, for sure. Some of our post targets went elsewhere last year even though we were supposedly the highest, or one of the highest, bidders. Right now, the SEC looks like a better place to develop skills and get coached.

So Hubert gave both Love and EC enough rope to hang themselves (let ‘em shoot too much, let ‘em get away with WAYYY TOO MANY turnovers - for a starting D1 point guard) only to put the hangman’s noose on ‘em at the end of their final seasons in Carolina Blue? And then pulled the lever on the trap door. Dang that’s cold. If Hubert is guilty of all of that, in both instances, then I am now, officially on the “Hubert’s gotta go” band wagon. Fire Hubert! Is there a website with that name yet?

And I’ll reiterate, that is a much worse “look” for other potential recruits than just a couple of players hitting the portal for more money or whatever. A much worse look.
That’s a weird way to frame it.

He gave both of those guys every opportunity to show what they had. Opportunity is all anyone should ask for.

There’s no “look” here. This is show business not show friends.

I don't know. Powell got better as the year went on. RJ Davis went from being a 4 star to ACC player of the year. Seth Trimble has improved, even if his shot hasn't improved that much. Brady Manek was better for us than for OU. Harrison Ingram improved by leaps and bounds from his sophomore year at Stanford.

Put it this way. On offense he's like Kendall Marshall. Except KM's sophomore year, no fans were ever calling for him to see less playing time.
Kendall Marshall and Elliott Cadeau weren’t remotely comparable offensively

KM had 9.8 apg vs. 2.8 TO/G. Cadeau had 6.2 apg vs. 3.1 TO/G.

KM shot 46.7% FG, 35.4% 3FG, 52.7% 2FG, 69.6% FT. Cadeau shot 44.5% FG, 33.7% 3FG, 49.2% 2FG, 67% FT.

KM - 8.1 ppg. 33 mpg. Cadeau - 9.4 ppg. 27.8 mpg.

No one played KM to score; but, they couldn’t just lay off him - 35% from “3” is too high AND an unguarded KM would just pick apart a defense.

Teams played off Cadeau.

That's my point. KM was a pass first PG who impacted the game without scoring a lot. Same with EC. Except KM was just better. We keep wanting EC to be KM (or Ed Cota) but he's not. Doesn't have the BB IQ.

And the message it's sending isn't good, either. If it's not about getting more money elsewhere, and it's not because he knows they are bringing in a better PG and he might not start, then he would be leaving just because he isn't happy playing there and doesn't like the program/coaching.
The message might not be good, but it reflects badly on whom? If Cadeau leaves, it will say as much or more about him as it does about Carolina.

If we can't replace a short point guard who can't shoot, led the conference in turnovers, has zero basketball IQ, and doesn't play a lick of defense, we really are fucked. I don't care how many pretty assists he mixed in with all those negatives. Cadeau's only real talent is looking like a good basketball player (sometimes) when he isn't one. Washington seemingly had promise early but nobody ever taught him how to eat. He could get boxed out by a feather. Could be our fault for not developing him at all, but regardless, he does not have what it takes to make a meaningful contribution here.

Seems like we have a good chance to land the guy who averaged 14.4 up at snail ball U and shot 42% from 3 last year at PG. Maybe my memory is failing me but I think Elliott Cadeau is our worst PG since Adam Boone. Bluntly, it's hard to do much worse. And his reported ask was $2 million.

To be fair, though, there are two players who transferred to UNC to play under Davis and had the best years of their careers (Manek and Ingram). And while RJ may have regressed this year, you also can’t discount the leap he made from his junior to to his senior year when he became a first team AA and ACC POY.

Ok, I'll take:
PG: Dedan Thomas (UNLV), Tremble, Dixon, Denis, Obi Agbim (Wyoming)
SG: Ian, Josh Dix (Iowa), Tremble, Dixon, Denis, Blake Harper (Howard)
SF: Powell, Bryce Hopkins (Providence)
PF: Caleb Wilson, Malik Reneau (Indiana)
C: Owen Freemen (Iowa), Magoon Gwath (SDST), Brown, Lubin.

I'm sure we will also be in the bidding war for Donovan Dent.

Also remember Ian Jackson will always be starving himself at the most important time of the season, even if he shows the brilliance he flashed in those five games the rest of the season.

This is true for the NYTimes as well. It's just that a) nobody from the Times would be looking at us; and b) the Times is much larger and thus each individual piece of information is less valuable.

I have no issues with this situation. I'm not IC premium and I don't care to learn its content; I also don't mind the cut-and-pasting for people who don't have subscriptions.
They’re gift links, specifically meant by the content owner to be shared with non-subscribers. There’s nothing analogous for IC premium.

I hope they would be smart enough to not show Cadeau the door unless they knew they had someone better coming in his place.
They obviously have had agent contact with a number of candidates. But until they sign the dotted line, there is always risk. I am sure we felt very secure with our potential bigs last year … until we didn’t.

That said, I expect we will get a taller and better shooter PG for next season who commits less fouls. Whether that is an upgrade remains to be seen.

Cadeau fucking sucks and would never lead us anywhere. Show him the door and show Donovan Dent and whoever else they can come here and lead a blue blood back to glory without some pesky little turnover machine to contend with. He will not be hard to replace.
