Hot Stove: UNC Basketball

Regarding those who've left or may leave via portal... do you really care to follow them at their new destination? Did anyone follow Arizona the past 2 years? Did anyone swoon for Trez and State? If (big if) Cadeau lands at d00k (or another rival school), are their any Tar Heel fans on this board going to root for Elliot to have a great season and to follow his stats and see how he does? You know, "once a Tar Heel, always a Tar Heel" sort of thing...

Or, are you going to be of a mind: "See, Caleb doing Caleb things; 3-20 and shot his team out of a game again!" Or: "Screw Trez and lolstate - he's a tool and a traitor for going to that cow college!"

Or maybe, just maybe: "meh, who cares? They're gone and forgotten"
I think it depends on their status at Carolina before they left. I certainly kept up with Caleb Love & Arizona over the last couple of years. Part of that is that UA is a top program and they're in the news/on tv more often, but a big part of it is that Caleb was an important player in his time at Carolina.

But I didn't keep up nearly as much with the other players who have left Carolina recently, like Dontrez, Puff Johnson, or Tyler Nickel.

I imagine that given EC's role at Carolina (and, I imagine, his new location to come), I'll keep up with him in a similar way to Love. He's a 2-year starter for the Heels and that means I'll likely keep tabs on how he does at this new home.

I don't necessarily cheer for those players at their new schools (nor do I necessarily cheer against them), I mostly keep up with how they and their team are doing. I did pull against State while Dontrez has been there, but that's because they're State. I largely hope our former players are successful wherever they go, but I don't feel much investment in how they do.

AS A REMINDER, please DO NOT share IC Premium (or other sports premium) info here unless you obtained it from a public source — like if someone posted it on the IC free board or a Facebook feed, then to me that is out in the public and free game.

But please don’t cut and paste or otherwise detail IC Premium info directly from IC, thanks.

Sorry I missed it as I had not had time to monitor this thread lately.

But cutting and pasting from subscription services like the NYT is OK . . .

I know the difference between the two situations, and it has largely to do with who is paying attention. It's just a bit odd, from a theoretical perspective, to be drawing a line between copyrights about recruiting news and copyrights about actual news.

Please just don’t do this on this issue man.

It's not a copyright issue or a quirk. Other sites have the same policy and also don't share between boards. The content is paid for by subscribers because it IS exclusive and confidential. Sharing it is a breach of trust and devalues the content.

I didn't even know we could make orange font that large.

I’ll start by saying I know nothing. But whee is the line exactly? A cut and paste.

If Premimu posts Jackson is going to Guam and I heard it from my grandma at the same time does that mean I can’t post Jackson is going to Guam? Relax I don’t ever know anything just trying to get the lay of the land.

Grandma knows her stuff.

This is true for the NYTimes as well. It's just that a) nobody from the Times would be looking at us; and b) the Times is much larger and thus each individual piece of information is less valuable.

I have no issues with this situation. I'm not IC premium and I don't care to learn its content; I also don't mind the cut-and-pasting for people who don't have subscriptions.

What else does Grandma HandsonFire know? Maybe she should start her own premium service.

Valid point on the first paragraph. I’m looking for a staff shakeup among the assistants. From what I’ve seen, I’d keep Lebo and maybe Paige, that’s it.

Regarding 5 stars transferring out, that fear is a relic of the old world IMO. They do it all the time now, from top programs, and nobody cares or even seems to notice.

And besides, 3-4 stars with grit and toughness are what this program needs to build a new foundation anyway. A soft 5 star without that can see himself out the door for all I care. The much bigger need IMO is a staff that can identify those dogs and establish the pipeline and resources to land them. Regardless of how many stars they have next to their names.

It's funny...every person I talk to (with varying levels of insight) picks different assistants to stay or leave. Pat was well regarded in NBA circles. Frederick is considered the administrator...the one who keeps the rain running on time (the old Bill Guthridge role). May seems to have connected with some families as a recruiter. Not sure what Leno's strength is...not saying he doesn't have one, just don't know. I was able to watch a practice last fall...got very specific instructions not to post anything about that practice (ironically went to a few other ACC schools and dint get that instruction...they even allowed me to take video clips for my personal use).

Regarding the old world fear of five stars...quite the contrary. Yes it happens all the time...but that's not necessarily a good reflection of the program. The agents now have much more power than before. Information gets shared like wildfire. If word gets around that XX staff is not good at handling a team or developing talent, you better bet that will make it more challenging to bring better talent.

I totally agree that this program hasn't done a very good job of toughness and grit. Only two guys with that quality this yer felt like Withers and Lubin (both of which have other issue).
