It's always amusing when the folks in Raleigh celebrate getting UNC's surplus to requirements. One man's trash, I guess, is another man's treasure. Not that Ven Allen is trash or anything remotely like that. It's just that I don't see it as some big coup that should delight the wuffies.

4 schools in 4 years, more than likely it’s the money.
I expect that we're going to see more and more of this as we move into this new Wild West, college sports-as-pro-sports, easy transfer era. The idea of college athletes playing for a school because they grew up loving the school and program is going the way of the dinosaur. College football and basketball players are now pro athletes and will simply go to the highest bidders or best situation for them each year. If that means staying with their current team for another season, then fine, but if it means going somewhere else then the great majority will do it at the drop of a hat. The old notion of loyalty to your school is dying a rapid death with current players, imo. We're going to see an increasing number of players who transfer to their current team's hated rival, or who transfer multiple times in their college playing career, because they were offered more money or playing time. That's what college sports are now, like it or not.

In other matters...I keep wondering what Jarin Stevenson is thinking. Much earlier on this thread I posted a potential starting line-up with him at the 4. Many quite realistically asserted that they thought that Caleb Wilson would be in that spot at the tip-off. Reconsidering my own thoughts I'd have to agree...the highly touted but unknown quantity will likely start. What a reversal from the "once-upon-a-time" story of freshmen needing to prove themselves, eh?

But who is Stevenson imagining he'll displace then? The Big Estonian? Wilson? He played a small amount of 3 at Alabama from what I understand...is that what he's thinking? Otherwise why come to Carolina? Is he homesick? Did we offer him that much more money than Oates?

Perhaps he knows that Coach Davis authentically cares about him and his family, as opposed to how everyone else looks at him.

After reading and watching some stuff on Luka, he does seem to be a better final piece than that other Euro wing they were looking at

Less upside overall maybe but better scoring and playmaking as it stands today. He does seem like more of a 2 than a 3 but don't think it matters

Still a little nervous about the PG situation but this team has solid depth, size, and shooting. Higher floor and ceiling hopefully than last year imo

There’s a decent chance we was going to take a pay cut at Bama.

Regardless, he’s a useful and needed piece for the Heels for this season. I’m glad they got him on board.

i think some of the interviews after he committed to us implied that he was genuinely a bit unsettled and homesick down at bama.

he's still only 19 years old.

and we already had both wilson and veesaar in the fold when he committed, so the PT situation/competition was crystal clear.

mom's alma mater hometown blueblood school plus a chance to compete for major minutes at multiple positions even if a starting spot isn't guaranteed. pretty good reasoning and maybe as someone else referenced we offered him a little pay bump, too.

Carolina might be better than last season, but will it be good enough for Davis to stay? It sucks that the teams Jackson and Cadeau went to are projected to be better than Carolina. Even State is projected to be better than Carolina with Lubin and their new coach. I don’t know if I want to start being like State and settling for just getting in the tournament.

preseason projections are a bigger crapshoot than ever before with the unprecedented roster turnover of the portal era.

none of those have been done since we added luka, anyway. he significantly changes the calculus for us. and i don't buy state being better than us with will wade and lubin, regardless. if they'd gotten haggerty, maybe. but they didn't.

I imagine there will be a sliding scale. If UNC gets in as anything below a 6-seed, he probably needs to at least reach the Elite Eight to keep his job. If UNC gets in as a 4- to 6-seed, he probably needs to at least reach the Sweet 16. If UNC gets in as a top-3 seed, he is probably safe if he gets at least one NCAAT win. Failure to make the NCAAT or to win in the round of 64 will end his coaching career at UNC.

Hauling in a big time HS recruiting class in 2026 may alter some of the above, but he will still need to get past the NCAAT round of 64.
