I am a supporter. I think the issues are portal, nil and we overestimated our brand. It's about money. He has 100 wins in 4 years, a NCAA runner-up that likely would have been a win except bacot was crippled and Manek concussed. He gave K his top two humiliating defeats. We were regular season champs last year and he was COY. This year has been tough but we knew it woukd be without a big. Clearly he has next year and I think we will spend big. Lee Roberts is not going to tolerate a mediocre program when pushing for a new arena so HD will have to produce, and Roberts and Cunningham presumably will define success. But now the point: The vocal minority are screaming fire HD and I think some of that is racial. But what has not been talked about is what would national reaction be to UNC firing its first AA head coach of major sport and how that would be framed. I suspect it could get really really ugly. I hope we get tourney hid, build a roster and HD and team kill it next year. Otherwise it could be very difficult.
Thoughts?

I think some of it is racial as well but that's not changing ,especially in this political climate. He just has to produce and hope tha's enough.

He is going to need NBA level talent if he continues to use the "offense" he has been using.
You need to show you know something about basketball. Pickup games don't count. You were complaining about how we were doing nothing but jacking threes early in the game when we had more dunks and layups than attempts from outside period, much less threes. I know. I looked because you weren't commenting on the same game I was watching. If you'd talk less and be right occasionally, people might actually listen occasionally. As it stands, egg prices would drop again if you got all of them off your face.

Fwiw, ain't no team going to do much without NBA talent, regardless of offense or defense.

Removed this from a poster on the game thread that later got himself banned during the second half before the comeback.

There is no movement on offense. That is the problem. There is one screen at the top of the key for the pick and roll. Everyone else is standing still. They watch whoever is dribbling the ball while standing around the three point line. Then if they don't get the pick and roll they just dribble the ball around, or pass the ball around the three point line, and then someone goes 1 on 1 off the dribble to create a shot. So, if they aren't shooting 3s then they are trying to drive 1 on 1. There is no movement without the ball. No off ball screens. Nothing to get better shots from screens and passing the ball.

There is no question that some of it is racial. There's also no question that even for those whom it's not racial, still sometimes get get super defensive about it (rather than go, say, "Yea, some of the people who share my opinions are children of the mob who attacked Ruby Bridges")

Some of it is also Coach Davis' outspoken faith, which draws a lot of people to him, but I think pushes some fans away.

And then I think most of it is just understandable frustration. It's true that our program hasn't adapted particularly well to the new NIL landscape, but it seems like some big changes are happening, so hopefully Coach Davis will have the roster he wants and needs to be successful next year.

I'm also a supporter...I love Coach Davis, and think that he represents everything good about "the Carolina Way." I think Coach Smith would love him and support him 100%, and I know Roy does. His gifts may not translate that well into a head coaching role, but firing him now would be the stupidest possible thing to do, he's just now getting enough experience under his belt and feel for NIL realities. I think if we have a strong roster next year and still underperform, than I think there would be reason to have a serious conversation about if he's the right guy long term.

Roy called the fans calling for his job now "idiots," and I'm with him. He's not wrong. Our fanbase - and every fan base - is chock full of them.

I think he's a great person. I also think others that think that makes them defend his coaching. The fact is if he has a season like this one or worse next season then he probably won't be the coach anymore.

You know that there are many substantive reasons why people support Coach Davis. The fact that you don't remember/understand them is on you.

Yep. Great post.

I sincerely suggest you watch auburn, Alabama and some other too 5 teams. The "hero ball" is played by many good teams. I grew up watching dean's motion offense and it was beautiful to see. Kids now are incredibly gifted and the style of play reflect that.

A great deal is expected of UNC Basketball-as it should be. We have Tanner and crew in place to catch up with the top schools in NIL/Portal stuff.
I expect we will have a better team "on paper" next October than we had this past October. And I expect Coach Davis will make the most of that roster

Alabama's offense is not the same. They have a lot more movement. Duke does, too.

So the ones defending Hubert, how do you think things should go if next season isn't better?
He will likely be fired. National media I think will go into a frenzy and not sure coaches will line up to replace one fired after averaging 25 wins. Who you hiring?

And if they happen to miss the tournament 3 out of 5 years, you think he should stay?

it’s a new era with Roberts. Major college sports is a bottom line business. Hubert needs to produce next season or he will be gone. Doesn’t matter about his race, faith, Carolina connection or character.

Agree.
