Yes indeed but he had a mediocre record his 1st 4 years at UCONN

Nevertheless is there any chance we can lure Hurley to UNC to replace Hubie ?

Hurley will win another at UCONN, then he leaves for an east coast NBA job. After 4 or 5 years in the league he comes back to be the head coach at dook where he finishes his career winning a couple more 'ships.

There is a reason why Roy retired when he did, at more or less the same time as all the elite coaches in the game who prioritized winning the right way (aka the Carolina Way)... many of whom retired far earlier than expected. We want somebody who is as good of coach as Dean AND as good of person as Dean.

There are plenty of coaches out there who I consider high moral character... but not many of those who are also elite coaches... and I'm not sure any of that subset we can confidently convince to take the UNC job after running one of our own out of town with torches and pitchforks. In order to come up with names who fit the bill as elite people, elite coaches, and obtainable... you have to start softening one or more of those criteria.

IMO, if we run HD out of town, it can only be for a slam dunk hire... otherwise this program really blows up and we're lucky to replace that person with somebody half as good as HD.

Apropos of nothing, this made me laugh much harder than it should...

Hey I love to day drink as much as anyone so no judgement lol. If anything I’m jealous. Arguing over trivial shit like college sports on the internet is always more fun when you’ve had a few vs. when you’re sober and running out the clock of the work day.

Fairly sure I established from day one that the only time I'm not posting under the influence is between the time I wake up, finish my first cup of coffee and walk on the back porch and smoke a bowl. You'll get more sense out of me after the coffee and bowl , fwiw.

After all these many many months you are the first to comment on my 7am day drinking. I had been under impression that posters understood my day drinking reference comments ironically, but thank the the lord finally you are the first to responded to it literally
Different strokes for different folks.

Good point
so who do we get to replace Hubie who can have UNC compete with dook**, AZ, UCONN, Purdue, and Houston ?
Who would I personally choose? Leaving aside the candidates I assume are not going to leave their current schools (Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, Matt Painter, Todd Golden, who has the personal baggage anyway, Hurley, who I don't personally like anyway) and the ones who I think are probably too old at this point to start a new job (Mark few, Kelvin Sampson) TJ Otzelberger would be at the top of my list. If Ryan Odom has another great year at UVA he would be an intriguing candidate too. Nate Oats would also be on that list as a solid candidate, though I know some people dislike his style of play (I don't really care about that, though I don't entirely love his personality).

Next tier down, Fred Hoiberg, Grant McCasland, and Mark Byington would also be worth consideration. Brad Underwood is maybe on the cusp of being in the "too old" group, and I don't know much about him, but his results at Illinois could make him worthy of consideration.

No one is a sure thing. But that's how my own wish list would look.

My bad for not keeping up with all of the inside jokes/references on here. I’ll do better next time.

I always ponder it — at least.

This is where I'm at/where I've been. You don't move on from HD for another question mark

I don't know much about him personally but I could get get on board with Otzelberger

Up until 6 months ago I would have a few cups of coffee in the early morning, but then the missus switched us over to decaf so if I couldn't get the early morning jolt I just moved my 10am day drinking back to 7am and skipped the coffee. I just want to be juiced; is that so wrong ?

I make no promises of getting sense out of me at any time of the day...

Wow !

I'm surprised you left me off your list:)

If that's wrong, I don't want to be right.

I pretty much quit drinking when I found out it probably caused my cancer. I can now that it's gone but I've gotten used to hemp products instead and still feel a few qualms about drinking more than once a month. That's like trying to fly on one wing.

Almost every coaching hire is a question mark to some extent. The Roy Williams-esque "elite legacy who basically feels duty-bound to take your job" hire is not a realistic standard and may never happen again for UNC or anywhere. There is no hire we can make that I guarantee will make us elite immediately. There is no hire we can make that I can guarantee will be better than Hubert Davis at UNC. But especially at a school that considers itself a blue blood, you simply have to keep trying to get an elite coach, even if you are not always successful. UK fans may not have been happy in the short term when they pushed out Tubby Smith (a coach with a better track record of consistent success than HD) and got Billy Gillespie, but after Cal followed Gillespie I bet very few of them would go back and undo the original decision.

There is, and will be, no guarantee. But if our goal is to remain an elite program, we either keep trying to hire an elite coach, or we accept no longer being a blue blood.
