Hubert has never seemed comfortable with the job. I can't really put my finger on one thing, but he is insular and tends to keep his guard up. I could see him doing better in a lower profile job with less of a media spotlight. Some coaches are just more suited to higher-profile jobs. The Field of 68 guys did not think TJO would thrive in the UNC spotlight.
I agree. Seemed like he really tried to keep everything around the program under wraps and was usually awkward with the media.

I get it, lots of coaches give canned answers to the press at times so easy to write that off as not a big deal. I still think how a coach presents himself to the public and controls the messaging around the program is an important part of the job though, and Hubert never seemed comfortable with that.

Which isn't as important if your are kicking ass.

Right. I guess my point is, when you aren’t great at the messaging side of things it makes it that much harder when the results start to slip. Donors and fans not as enthused, recruits/transfers not viewing the program in a positive light, etc.

It's also a much easier thing to do when you're winning.

Which brings us back to the fishbowl environment, in that you can lose a bit more in a lot of other places before fans and the media really get on you.

At Carolina, 2 losses in a row pretty much brings out the hounds.

Coincidentally, Dave Glenn on his show today touched on this exact topic of Hubert seeming to not be comfortable with all of what the job has required. (Here's the link queued up and you only need to listen to 6 or so minutes to get the gist.)

On the recent IC podcast Greg discussed how Hubert never seemed comfortable with soliciting donations from the boosters, which in this day and age is part of the job at a high major program. So that is one example if true.

he's either about to resign or be fired from a job with a fishbowl environment.

that kinda indicates that he didn't do well in a fishbowl environment.

as for media/press/public sentiment specifically, he wasn't a disaster but he didn't exactly thrive, either.

he made some postgame comments over the years that were a bit head-scratching, the thing where he declared that styles and dunn would be all time UNC greats was a totally avoidable snafu, earlier this season after the failtastic CA road trip he made some tone-deaf comments and neither he nor the university covered themselves in glory with the zayden high situation.
He has said a lot of stupid shit in public. I don’t know if that means he failed the fishbowl environment, but his inability to communicate authentically was quite clear in the post-game press conference.

At the end of the day Hubert is old school which was a big part of the attraction.

One last change to hang on the old ways and honor Dean Smith.

Say what you will, Hubert's demise spells the end of those things in a tangible way.

But, the world moves on.

I don't ever recall Hubert saying after a game that he needed to do a better job coaching. Dean and Roy said it often after losses.

You like the reminder of K’s last home game and the Final Four huh? One of those self-flagellating types.
Fortunately, the outcome of the KS game (was Roy wearing a sticker?) was a bit of a salve. K's last year was about getting Jon ready.
Zion's team should have won in 2019, but was just a viable pair of shoes away.

IC’s message boards are such a cesspool anymore. I’m so glad I cancelled my membership there. The reporting from people like GB is absolutely second to none, but I’m not in a place in my life where I care one iota about any “inside information” about anything UNC sports related.
Ok
