It might be me being silly but I'm perfectly content to wait until the season is over or ,at least, much closer to being over to decide how I feel.
Not being silly.
I truly struggle with the volume of hate directed at Hubert. Some is clearly racial. I still hear comments like he is not up to the job, he has low ceiling, etc. We are 20-5 after a poor season with wins over Kansas Kentucky dook and Virginia. If the standard is dean, which it appears to be, those days are over.
Dook is an anomaly because of the war chest. Kelvin Sampson might be best coach in college. Hurley up there too.
There is parity now.
There is no one who wants this job. I am just glad that Hubert continues to grow as a coach, both on sidelines and in recruiting.
It could get ugly without Caleb. We will see. But if UNC fired Hubert, I still say it will be a PR nightmare. Remember, Hubert was in the studio. Those guys like him. Firing an AA coach who averages 25 wins a year after his lottery pick goes out with so-called MAGA leadership making the call .... ?
Amazed folks look the other way on this.

Speaking my wandering mind here on several levels.

You bring up a number of really good points. I do take exception with this though: "There is no one who wants this job." I disagree with that. I think there would be a number of coaches who would want the job, a number of high profile coaches.

As to other points you bring up, I think Hubert's connection to the media, especially the ESPN media is a good point. I think your, and others, worry over the current leadership making the decision is a valid concern.

Did any big name coaches express interest when we hired Hubert? I could be wrong but I thought some calls were made that did not go far. Who is out there that we could hire?

I don't know if we seriously contacted big name coaches before hiring Hubert.

I don't fully know who is out there that we could hire. I do think there would be serious interest in the job. I think saying "there is no one who wants this job" is not accurate. Again, just my opinion.

Fair. I think we did call some.jamie Dixon I am sure we spoke with. Maybe they all thought Hubert was done deal. I dunno. I don't see any slam dunk hires that dwarf what we got. Add in the variable of daily shellacking for firing an A-A coach and the potential fallout.

Yeah, I do think you bring up valid concerns.

Also the non-UNC basketball world thinks he’s doing a good job this season

That has been the sentiment from everyone I’ve heard or talked to about HD
Kentucky shows a good case in point of what can happen when you push out a coach based on perceived unrealistic fan expectations. The "great coaches" all have created great spots for themselves. There are no slam dunk hires out there who fit both the Carolina Way AND we can have a high degree of confidence they will walk away from what they have to deal with UNC fans who compare everybody to idealized versions of Dean and Roy... which I don't think even they could live up to in today's environment.

Most of the great coaches of the last decade have walked away from coaching... many well before their time... particularly the ones who did things the "right way" as UNC perceives it.

There is a false narrative being bandied about that fans who are not ready to give up on HD are ok with mediocrity. It's the flip side of the coin to those same fans being accused of wanting UNC to lose/ do poorly so HD will be forced out. Everybody wants and expects more for UNC. The debate is weighing the risk/ reward of giving HD more time vs all the uncertainties of hiring a new coach...

Which is the opposite of the sentiment from people i talk to. Now my interactions are with people who gamble on the sport, but spend a lot of time watching it and the sentiment is he’s terrible and UNC is wasting time with him. I’m resigned to the fact he’ll be back and will be another lost season in 27 without any real path for competing.

Could we say, as perhaps with the job of president, that anyone that wants the job ought not to have it?

If you think this is a lost season, you should walk away. This season is incomplete. It will be difficult if we go another 3 weeks without Caleb. The fact that Caleb wants to come back also speaks well of Hubert.
I think at the top of the list of attributes for anti Hubert people is didn't go to UNC. I know exceptions on here. And to be further clear I doubt anyone on here is anti Hubert because he is AA.

“Terrible” is a bizarre takeaway of the current season

UNC just needs to offer Wilson NBA money x 2 and we’ll be good.

The folks I know who dislike him disliked the original hire-so when I talk to them I know they have that "told you so " bias.

I get your point but "no real success"?
We've essentially been out of the ACC regular season title race since leaving the Bay Area in mid-January. Even before the injury to Caleb we were a single-digit probability to win the ACCT (which is reduced even further now that Caleb is injured). And we're predicted to be a ~5 seed in the NCAAT and it would be decently major surprise if we made it further than the S16.

So, yeah, no real success.

Yeah there’s a ton of time left in the season so I’m fine with waiting to see how it plays out before taking a stance here about Hubert, but I don’t understand why so many UNC fans want to downplay how desirable the HC job is. While we obviously couldn’t just throw a dart at the board and take any coach we wanted, I’m positive we would still have plenty of interest.

I'm curious. I believe that you went to school at Carolina. What were your undergrad years?
