I don't see us getting the double bye. I don't believe Miami loses 2 or Clem's son loses to GT. Guess we have to beat dook again.

Win 2 or more in the ACC, then a top 4 seed and a second weekend or better in the NCAA tournament and this is an objectively good season. The next step is consistent with winning these coming years, which will be determined by how we continue to adapt and build our team. Missing at needed positions and ending up with unbalanced teams, if it continues, will be a big concern.

It looks like we could be in good shape next year with guards, but we don't know yet how our bus will pan out.

Could you imaging a situation where Veeser and Wilson both came back? We would be contenders.
We actually just need Miami to win 1, or we beat duke, or clemson loses to get the double bye

Both schools are among the elite programs in CBB and both presumably reasonably aspire to be year in and year out among the best teams in the nation.

How is it not a fair comparison?

We're not comparing programs.

We're having a discussion about the job Davis has done in the wake of Roy Williams. If the motivation is to simply be better than Duke or on par with Duke, that's fine. But now you're looking at it through a tinted lense. There is no way to unsee the success Scheyer has had the last two seasons, and his success is simply not sustainable over the course of a career. Sure he will continue to have good years but the last two years have been otherworldly. It's not fair to Davis to hold him to that standard. It's not fair to Scheyer.

And the season isn't over. Davis is having a really good year.

What is the end goal for the program? You're 24-6 with an undefeated home record and a win over your blood rival. I think HD has earned some leeway, no? At what point is he not "coaching for his job" every year?
Unfortunately, with some, he will always be coaching for his job. I suspect that for some people, it's more than his coaching. Some didn't want him to begin with and will never accept him.

Certainly the regular season in 2024 was better than this year overall, but not 20 spots in the rankings better. I just think the advanced metrics suck up 90% of the oxygen and simply being based on math doesn’t mean they aren’t sometimes wrong.
Of course where you are ranked in any particular season is relative to the competition that exists in that season. But even aside from the metrics, that was a better, more well-rounded team in terms of quality talent compared to this year. We had an All-American guard who was a major scoring and 3-point threat. We had a true point guard. We had two All-ACC bigs, one of whom was a legit 3-point threat. We had a solid, experienced wing who averaged double-digit points and was a solid 3-point threat.

This season, we have an elite front line when healthy, mainly inconsistent guards who are generally inconsistent 3-point threats, and no real point guard.

I think if you took the best 15 games that the 2024 team played and the best 15 games that this year’s team played, and compared them, you would think 2024 team looks a lot better.

The good thing is they are winning tough games that they could have lost. Even if they haven't looked great in some games they have won, it's always better to come away with a win than a loss.

I called it a few wins ago that HD was safe...and we've won even more games since then. This team could make it to Sweet 16 (second round matchup will be crucial), but I don't think were a FF team unless Caleb goes wild.

Needs to string a few solid seasons to avoid a warm seat.

Totally. I felt like last season was the opposite. We struggled to seal the deal time and time again. This season we’ve been able to seal the deal on most occasions.

Yes, need to see some consistency. The problem has been the up and down from one season to the next, and even inconsistent play within the seasons. Just not sure how long they can continue with Hubert if that is the same pattern going forward.

As we talk about wanting to see HD put together quality consecutive seasons, it really is amazing to think about what Dean Smith was able to accomplish. Obviously Roy was about as good as it gets, and winning 3 national championships in 18 years, in addition to other accomplishments, is truly amazing. But as for Dean, between 1967 and 1997 (31 seasons), he had only 4 seasons where he finished with a record under .700 and never finished with a record under .600. Once at-large NCAAT bids became a thing in 1975, he never missed a single NCAAT. Once the NCAAT expanded to 64 teams in 1985, he failed to reach the Sweet 16 (or better) only twice. And in his last 6 years of coaching, he reached 4 Final Fours (funny enough, those 2 years he did not reach the Final Four were the only 2 years after the NCAAT expanded to 64 teams that he failed to reach the Sweet 16.)

Clemson beats GT to finish 12-6
UNC loses to dook** to finish 12-6

UNC has the tiebreaker to finish 4th in the ACC. Does finishing 4th not give us a double bye ?

I for one, am enjoying the hell out of this season. I really like this team. With a generational talent like Caleb, and 4 year dude Trimble... throw in some magic from the transfer portal with Veesaar... add a nice frosh point guard in Dixon... a nice little foreign pick up with Luka (who seems to be figuring it out now) and with coach HD doing much better with things like rotations, calling great plays out of time outs and after halftime adjustments... PLUS everybody is "likeable" and full of positive waves... They're all a joy to watch and listen to in interviews. They're fun to watch on the bench as it erupts after a Trimble dunk or a Powell 3.

Really fun stuff for me this year. Enjoyed the ride immensely and I look forward to it continuing with at least 4 more W's. I'll take that season to the bank.

Kudos to HD for assembling this team and guiding it to this point - after all the injuries to ALL the star players.

Just FYI - we don't need Miami to lose twice to get the double bye. In fact that's part of the only potential scenario in which we don't get the double bye. If Miami wins at least 1 of its last 2, they get the 3 seed and we hold the H2H tiebreaker over Clemson for the 4 seed. The only scenario where we don't get a double bye is (i) we lose to Duke, (2) Clemson wins its last game, and (iii) Miami loses out.

Last year's roster is up in the air. We 100% will not have Trimble and Wilson. I think it's about 85% we don't have Veesaar. We have two good recruits coming in but we need to sort out who will be staying from our various guard/wing backups, we badly need an impact wing, and we likely need an impact portal 5.

If Miami loses both, there is a 3 way tie between us, miami, and clemson- we lose that by a pretty absurd tiebreaker and end up the 5 seed
gotcha

So if it ends up in a 3 way tie I think all 3 have a 1-1 record against each other. If I'm right then what is the next tiebreaker step that leaves us in 5th place ?

It’s record against highest seeded opponent that all 3 teams played (Miami didn’t play duke and clemson didn’t play UVA) i think it literally comes down to Cal or something.
Greg Barnes wrote about it in the last week

Yea, I realize that now. Much better that I first thought. Hopefully it works out.

Yes, looks like we will be needing bigs in the portal again. I hate that we potentially have to pay with some players to make room for others.
