I’m not optimistic about Lee Roberts, the BOG, and their hand-picked NASCAR AD choosing a new basketball coach.
I’m also not too enthused with Hubert as head coach. On just one minor level, Hubert is too manic on the sideline. If you’re having to constantly shout instructions to the players on the floor during games, WTF were you and your assistants doing in practice?
I also think UNC was LATE to the paying players big money game; and, I think that Hubert’s UNC-only staff hurts us on this front and other fronts. They seem to believe that “it’s a 40-year choice” matters today.
Today’s players don’t look at a Pat Sullivan and think, “Damn, he made a good 40-year decision.”
Today’s players look at it and think, “SHOW ME THE MONEY!” They’re not thinking, “Will this help me in 2066?”
If the decision is to fire Hubert, the PTB better sign one helluva Coach. The problem is identifying who is “one helluva Coach.”
The three greatest head coaches in the ACC were obscure nobodies when they became head coaches in power conferences:
- Dean Smith, assistant coach at UNC; hung in effigy early in career
- Coach K - record at Army was 73-59. 14-11 and 9-17 his last two seasons. Iron Dukes wanted his ass fired. The Duke AD (I think it was Tom Butters) told the Iron Dukes that K was the man and to shut the fuck up and back the coach. I hope Duke paid Butters well. He also hired Spurrier.
- Roy Williams - the SECOND assistant at UNC when KU hired him. KU’s AD’s wife said to her husband, the AD, “You’re going to hire that nobody assistant from UNC, aren’t you?” Roy won big at KU and came home and won more bigly.
Where does the next Dean Smith, K, or Ol’ Roy come from?
