Asked my AI pal who it had as the leading candidates to replace CHD (excluding "family"). Here are the results:

1. TJ Otzelberger - Iowa State
2. Todd Golden - Florida
3. Mark Byington - Vanderbilt
4. Tommy Lloyd - Arizona
5. Scott Drew - Baylor
6. Nate Oats - Alabama
7. Billy Donovan - Chicago Bulls
8. Brad Underwood - Illinois
9. Dusty May - Michigan
10. Eric Musselman - USC

If UNC is truly committed to an outside hire, the most likely outcome — balancing ambition, feasibility, and financial reality — is TJ Otzelberger. His buyout is manageable, his track record is excellent, his age is right, and his system is built for the modern game. He is the Bill Self-to-Kansas analogy that multiple UNC fans have invoked: a proven winner at a resource-limited program who would be unleashed at a blue blood.

Todd Golden remains the dream, and UNC should absolutely make the call — but should plan for a no. Mark Byington is the most underappreciated option and could be the steal of the cycle. Tommy Lloyd is the highest-ceiling realistic hire if UNC is willing to absorb the buyout cost. And Scott Drew, despite his recent struggles, brings the one credential that matters most at Carolina: a national championship ring.

I think Otzleberger and Bynington would be the best choices that would actually consider leaving where they are now for UNC.

You have to call Stevens. IMO he is the onlynon- UNC guy who could bridge the ":UNC family" issue. He also could be announced right away with start date TBD.

If he says no, the others mentioned announce would have to wait given tourney but you start dealing with agents.

I am a huge fan of the Iowa coach who has a HOF record but not at P5 level

I don't know how to feel about the fact that AI and I are completely aligned on who the top realistic candidate is.

We can call Stevens if we want but I think the chances he would remotely consider leaving his current job are essentially zero.

Would be nice to have one Carolina guy involved but that's the new hires call.

What's the actual chance that Hubert is gone? 50/50? 90/10? 10/90?
I have no "inside information", but I do think that VCU loss was the straw that broke the camel's back for the boosters, powers-that-be, and people in charge. There's just no real excuse for us losing that game - it has to be one of the most epic meltdowns in UNC men's basketball history, at least in terms of blowing a huge lead late in the second half. And if you listen to Hubert's post-game press conference he really can't explain it either, which is doubly troubling. My own gut feeling is that he's done. I don't think they're going to give him a choice - either step down gracefully and accept a generous financial package, or we'll just fire you. And I hate to see it because I've supported him and wanted strongly for him to succeed, but that epic collapse was just indefensible and likely was too much to justify keeping him. That VCU game may go down as a major turning point in UNC basketball history - for good or ill remains to be seen.

Tommy Lloyd has to be the first call we make.
I would agree that we have to at least call Lloyd's agent to gauge interest. But the chances he would seriously consider leaving seem pretty low. Guys who are already in elite jobs and happy/successful there are highly unlikely to be interested in moving.

Isn’t it interesting and ironic that Hubert bringing Caleb Wilson to Chapel Hill may ultimately be a critical factor in what ends his UNC coaching career? He brought in this great, elite player who is arguably the best freshman we have ever had, and among one of the most fun players we have watched play at UNC, and his season-ending injuries no doubt impacted the outcomes of the final games of the season, which will likely result in Hubert losing his job.

As an outsider looking in, would Golden be a stretch?

Would definitely send shockwaves through CBB. And Kentucky being the exception, SEC schools care more about football than basketball, even their hoops teams are elite.

UNC is a more prestigious hoops job, and if a commitment is being made to upgrade facilities in the coming years, I’d at least make the call if I were UNC.

If IC is writing articles that we’re likely to move on, you’ve got to think ~90+% gone.
I know people have their opinions about IC but it’s impressive that there reporters are always so on top of this stuff. Most of the country is probably going to be stunned, meanwhile all of the fans with access to that site have known the news days in advance like an open secret lol.
