For most of my life, there was a "Hispanic" box, as well as White/Caucasian, Black/African-American, Asian-American, Native American/Pacific Islander (although the -American were largely added in the 80s and 90s).For the majority of all of our lives, there were somewhere between 3 and 5 recognized human races. Most Mex Mexicans, to varying degrees, we're a part of the Caucasian race.
Grouping some latinos as "white" is a fairly recent development.
