“… The New York Times interviewed 40 of the former prisoners, many at their homes in cities and towns across Venezuela. We then asked a group of independent forensic experts who help investigate torture allegations to assess the credibility of the men’s testimony.

Several doctors from that team, known as the Independent Forensic Expert Group, said the men’s testimonies, along with photographs of what they described as their injuries, were consistent and credible, providing “compelling evidence” to support accusations of torture. The group’s assessments in other cases have been used in courts around the world.

… The forensic experts said that they were struck by how similar the men’s allegations were. The former prisoners, each interviewed separately, described the same timeline and methods of abuse, with many of the same details.

When such “identical methods of abuse” are described by multiple people, the experts wrote in their assessment, it “often indicates the existence of an institutional policy and practice of torture.”…”

Charlotte next?
Some of the Border Patrol teams dispatched to Chicago could be diverted to Charlotte, North Carolina for an operation that is expected to start there this month, the U.S. officials said. Immigration and Custom Enforcement, which has a field office in Chicago, is expected to continue carrying out immigration arrests in the region.

I’ve never cared much what Catholic bishops have to say about abortion or pedophilia, for instance, so I am not particularly moved by this stand. But it would be nice if they could have a positive influence on DHS/ICE treatment of immigrants and Americans alike.

My wife stopped at the Midtown Target on the way to her nail appointment today. She said the Metropolitan was crawling with masked guys in bulletproof vests that said “AGENT” on them. She said the second and top levels of the Target parking deck appear to be staging areas.

But Midtown? The Metropolitan? I guess they are rounding up all the illegal bougies shopping for brie and hummus at Trader Joe’s or the day drinkers watching college football at Lost Worlds Brewery. Maybe Kristi Noem will stop by for a slice at Omaggio.

I posted earlier this week they would engage in performance art at locations with lots of spectators but few of their targets (no pun intended.) If they want to raid all the construction activity in the Pearl around the new med school, why choose a Saturday when the workers aren’t there?
