In short, legal sports gambling is creating a pathway to financial distress for vulnerable individuals. States that legalized sports betting were often instructed by their legislatures to set aside some funding from the tax receipts to deal with problem gambling and addiction. But reporting and research show a huge disparity between how much states tax the betting industry.
 
I don't bet on sports but Virginia mare it so you couldn't bet on in-state teams if you were located in Virginia but I could go to MD and bet on them if I wanted.

I have a group text with 7 of my friends from college years.

2 of those have within the last 3 years had to go to rehab for gambling addiction. In addition to bankruptcy, divorce, etc.

It really hits home for me how this impacts regular people. In that group text we talk about sports all the time and when you’re trying to NOT bring up gambling or gambling-adjacent topics, it makes it amazingly clear how it is everywhere.
 
I will never have a gambling addiction because I hate losing a lot more than I like winning.

You could of course say the stock market is gambling but over the long haul its pretty much a sure bet if you diversify.

I’m with you griff when it comes to sports betting. The thrill of victory is not as great as the agony of defeat.
 
I would love to sese some study on how North Carolina's timimg coincided with the greatest loss leader in Retail history I know tons of Youngins that just kept winning on Nc States run And have not won a penny since

Many years ago I flew into Detroit to drive down to the Toledo area to see my grandmother who didn't have long to live. I took a red eye and got into Detroit right around dawn.

One of my good friends is from Detroit, so I jokingly took a selfie in the parking lot of an abandoned gas station, with the GM building in the background and said "I thought we were meeting here!"

The irony is that the entire area was a ghost town. Not a person in sight. No operating businesses in sight....but the casino I was across the street from was packed. Cars on every level of the parking garage.
 
It blows my mind that states have rushed to legalize sports betting everywhere while still outlawing poker (probably due to lobbying from powerful sports-industry interests). Both can lead to problem gambling but IMO sports betting is far worse in some ways - invites corruption and fixing into pro and college sports, much easier for the online companies to exploit given the house edge as opposed to just the house getting a take, etc.
 
I feel very fortunate about not ever being bitten by the gambling bug. I simply don't bet on much of anything other than the innocuous "office pool" come Super Bowl time and even then I only bet $10 on one square of the board. I do feel sorry for those addicted.

I feel the same way. I’ve had my issues with drugs and alcohol but am sober now. Thankfully I’ve never had the urge to gamble.

About 10 years ago I went to a casino in Pittsburgh and did some slots, played a little blackjack, and I didn’t think much of it. Then I saw my cousin play. He was drinking and was really into it, but lost about $1000. I knew right then I never wanted to go in a casino again.

yup. i know a couple of nc state fans who paid for their trips to the FF with gambling winnings and of course haven't won shit since.

Yeah, I have my vices for sure, but gambling just isn’t one of them for me thankfully.

As someone who consumes a lot of sports content, I hate how much gambling has been ingrained over the last few years. If people want to gamble then that’s 100% fine with me, I just don’t need every single segment of every single pregame show, podcast, etc. to be a thinly veiled Fanduel ad.
