Inauguration Day Catch-All | Dust up over flying flags at half mast

And I would think that the new president would care more about honoring the deceased. Yes, Jimmy Carter would not want all the fuss about him, but that's not the point. It's a symbolic gesture that our nation does to honor a former president, whether they would want it or not. This is a gesture that every other president - Democrat, Republican, Whig, etc. - would absolutely be in favor of doing. Every president but one. That should tell you something.

Just incredible how egotistical Trump is.
The whole thing is so dumb. I mean, I don't actually object to raising the flags to full mast during his inauguration ceremony (or the whole day) and then lowering them back for the remainder of the 30-days of mourning thing (which seems like a long time to me anyway). I just can't believe Trump is such a small person -- well, I believe it, but can't fathom being that small and petty and needy, especially in his position. The guy just doesn't even seem to intellectually grasp the concepts of being magnanimous or empathetic or respectful, much less have any emotional intelligence to actually feel such things.

Heck, I would even understand if his team said look, lots of photos of the event will always have the flags at half mast for unrelated reasons and that is not great optics. Sure, I can't really disagree from a purely optics perspective (and I'm not personally wedded to all the pomp and circumstance around handling the flag anyway -- I mean I violate it a good bit wearing hats and clothing with the flag pattern, to be honest).

But this has been about Trump complaining that it is not fair to him ("ME!"). All id, all the time, I guess.

It's going to be a LOOOOONG four years.

Yikes, high around 25 and low around 9 predicted on Inauguration Day in DC, with steady winds of 10-15 mph and higher gusts. I imagine the wind chill will be rough.

I read it will be the coldest since Reagan was inaugurated in January 1985 (they cancelled the parade and did that one indoors due to the extreme below zero wind chill that day, I think the high was about 9 degrees). People will need to seriously bundle up.

I was reading that tidbit yesterday. Burrrrrr

Yeah, reading about it reminded me of the plane crash in the frozen Potomac in 1982. That really horrified me then and always stuck with me. People on the bridge died. A passenger drowned after saving others and people jumped into the frozen river to at least save a handful of passengers …

I'm actually shocked Trump moved the inauguration indoors. It's obviously the right thing to do from a safety perspective, but Trump's never been one to put safety above spectacle. My guess is his team was telling him that with very cold temps, and maybe also just the general exhaustion in the country, the crowds would have been sparse and he would have been mocked for it after the big deal he made about it in 2017. Regardless, though, I'm glad for the people who have to be there that it will be inside.
