You don’t have to analyze the rescue mission solely through the lens of compassion and benevolence.

There is also a Real Politik reason to spend hundreds and millions (and even billions) of lost equipment on a rescue mission.

If Iran had a hostage, it would have tremendous propaganda value and would put extreme pressure on America to cut a deal favorable to Iran. Every day, it would be the lead story on the news. It would be the top post on this site. Trump’s polling would drop even faster than it is.

The rescue wasn’t just about one life (although that was important). It was about preventing Iran from using asymmetrical warfare against the US.

Trump's back and forth behavior today also reminds me of his Ukraine performance. Remember it all started with his day one promise and dragged on and on with threats and assertions that peace was almost at hand. So I am just going to assume that's happening again.
