So we’re going to blockade a strait that is already closed?
Apparently, and on the theory that if we blockade the strait too then somehow that will be the thing that will cause Iran to give up. Which will likely continue to drive up gas prices here and elsewhere around the world. And I'm sure that this blockade will be just as well-thought-through as our initial decision to attack Iran was.

Iran is literally outsourcing its dirty work to Trump.

The international world sees the US as the bully here. Iran as just defending itself. But Iran is shitty and nobody likes having the strait closed, so while everyone knows the US is at fault, countries like Korea, Japan, etc were pissed at both sides.

And now the US is taking full ownership of all shitty aspects. Iran can now truthfully say, "you want oil, talk to the US about that. We're just sitting here trying to defend our civilization"

The Israeli government sucks. They are terrorists. Full stop.

Israeli people are not the Israeli government. Therefore Israeli people are not inherently terrorists.

Jewish people are not necessarily Israeli, and even if they are Israeli, are not the Israeli government. Therefore Jewish people are not inherently terrorists.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Disclaimer: yes, Iran’s government sucks and are also terrorists.
But see: recent polling of the Israeli Jewish population shows overwhelming support for the atrocities/war crimes/genocide in Gaza. A mere 5% think the war tactics went too far while a full 40% think the government didn’t go far enough.

Point: when you’re talking about a population that has been radicalized by a dogma of hatred and ethno-nationalism fueled by religious zealotry, the leadership has free reign to maraud against the infidels - terrorism.

The real issue is how the US government came to be a co-actor in a tribal war that is an ocean away, incurs tremendous costs and rests only on the flimsiest of rationalizations.

This is the great question that Americans are now having to face: how did the interests of a few overwhelm the interests of the many? Those narrow interests have operated to stifle and outlaw free speech using their spurious accusations of “antisemitism” and propaganda campaigns to control the narrative.

Our problem is not in west Asia; it’s in DC.

Honestly I do not understand how these demands are supposed to work. Iran can say today, "no more money for Hamas." Then in a month we leave and they start funding Hamas again. It goes the other way too. Iran says, "you must guarantee us no more attacks." How? These are behavioral covenants being offered on people who have shown absolutely no interest in having their behavior constrained, and who would not find any of them legit even if they were carefully negoiated.

I would like for Callatory to explain what cards Trump has left to play? His most recent one is this blockade which is rather wild considering he actually lifted sanctions on Iran because he was worried about oil prices. So what does he think a blockade of Iranian oil will do to oil prices? And last time I checked, China had a decent sized oil reserve.

I suspect the whole point of negotiations is for Trump to surrender, but unfortunately for him Iran doesn't seem willing to accept.

I actually think the US blockading Hormuz is a decent idea. It shouldn't take long until China starts pressuring Iran to negotiate a deal.
Or accelerates those weapons shipments they’re already planning, which will make it untenable for us to keep our Navy in the area.

Disclaimer for any recreational contrarian who may be annoyed by the above: yes, Iran’s government sucks and are also terrorists.
I don't know why people can't understand this

When did IDF last proactively, and without provocation, terrorize a terrorist country?

Chevy Chase Ellie GIF
They terrorize the Palestinians and support settler terrorism.

"Provoke" in the middle east has it never a ending trail... but even if we start with the establishment of Israel, they have contributed to the drama in the region.

Also, take a look at the map of the original Israel plan and a map of Israel today.
