This is pretty consistent with reporting that the original plan was to attack them on February 20 but weather interfered, so they put it off a week. In the meantime they needed things to appear to be progressing on the diplomatic front so as not to tip their hands.

So, if these two reporting strands are true, they went into the negotiations with absurdly high demands and never had a good faith intent to do anything but kill time. They were probably surprised and maybe even annoyed by what Iran said they could accept since the goal was ask for the moon and blame Iran for rejecting their terms.

All very Putin-like, if you stop to consider.

That man has more political lives than a cat, and in the end I think his base will rally to him nearly every time, because as has been frequently mentioned it's a cult of personality, not a political party. It shouldn't be at all surprising, however, that Trump and his minions did this without thinking of any of the consequences of what they were doing or the long-term implications. They're incapable of that kind of planning, imo.

Oh, my second cup of coffee was just kicking in. Of course I know what do expect although he surprised me the other day. I commented on a post of his the other day and he accused me of missing the point. I think he was wrong. I completely missed that he was trying to make one. How does that count?
 
We weren’t seeking regime change, but we knew Israel was going to kill all of their top government officials, so our goal was to take out everything else so they couldn’t attack our bases in response to Israel’s action?
 
As the explanations for this war, most of which are internally inconsistent, reach the double digits, I'm starting to get a little concerned the people who are making the decisions -- Trump, Netanyahu, Hegseth, Rubio, etc. -- might not be aligned on tactics and messaging. Anyone able to reassure me here?
