Conservatives going from skeptics of the state to full "I only trust what the government tells me, thinking for yourself is bad," is so funny man. They really do not believe in anything. Trump says War Bad; they say War Bad. Trump says War Good; they say War Good. That's it. There are no actual ideas or principles anymore on the right. All the sound and noise are just window dressing.

But now he's worried that when his visa expires he and his family will be forced to leave the country, and certainly his views on Trump have changed (I know he's a FAFO case, but he is a nice man and a great family man from what I can see). His brother and sister-in-law were working in the US as teachers and have been forced to leave on short notice, they're moving to Spain if I remember correctly. The bottom line is that seeing Iranians celebrating in the streets is hardly reason for Trumpers to gloat, given what happened in Venezuela. Unless the government actually changes there those celebrations may be short lived.

I agree, but that too is a facade. Trumpers may claim, on social media, that they care about the people of Venezuela and Iran, but this is rally just pure power fantasy for them. They want the United States to be feared, rather than loved, across the world.

They love the chaos that destruction causes, seeing people struggle elsewhere, because it makes them feel that, even though they don’t have order over their own lives, they have more order than others. It is what gives their existence purpose. Power. Control. The ability to destroy on a whim. To feel like a God among mortals. That is the goal. The darker side of the American Dream. Not a City Upon A hill, but a kingdom above a valley.

Yes, there are former Trump voters who, like your friend, were fleeced. But for most Trumpers, the joy in seeing Iranians dance is entertainment, puppets on a string. Noble savages, yes, but savages nonetheless. That is how they view the non-western world, except maybe for those who fetishized Japan, believing that its isolation should be emulated, not understanding that it is a country experiencing a slow bleed.

Total federal spending in 2021 was about $6 trillion. About 2/3rds of that was defense, social security, medicare/medicaid and interest. I'm not sure where Biden would have squeezed DEI and green initiatives in there.
