Ive mentioned it before, but 2 friends of mine who are Maronite Christians and left Zgharta over 30 years ago. They lament what has happened to their country and have lots of disgust for invaders. They detest the Iranians. They despise the Israelis. They don't think highly of the Druze. They are suspicious of Syria. But they have the most hate for the Palestinians. They blame most of their ills on them.
I’m not questioning or challenging what you wrote.

I’m wondering why your friends have the most hate for and place the most blame on what is likely the weakest group in Lebanon, the Palestinians.

Agree, and it's especially hard when people in the administration (and many outside) are constantly using social media declarations to undermine and contradict reporting that's being done by journalists who actually work really hard to fact check, such as the NYT and CNN.
The NYT and CNN work hard at fact checking? They do when its trying to find something to rebut trump on but not so much when their preferred political party needs fact checking. Given the black eye your media has suffered recently on multiple occasions, I'm surprised you could type that with a straight face. And if you did and actually believe that then its probably time to for you to be sheered.

They would be able to answer better than me, but from their point of view, they don't belong in Lebanon. While that may be the fault of the Israelis, they blame much of the disaster of the past 50 years on the arrival of the refugees. They think they already had a place to go, called Jordan. I'm not saying they are right. I am just telling you they don't like many people around them, but they hate the Palestinians, not because they are weak but because they are there. They almost consider themselves European or at least Phoenician and they say their country is ruined and never coming back. The demographics have changed too much. Maybe they are wrong. Just telling you what they tell me on the golf course.

They sound like dickheads. Blaming people for "being there" when those people largely have nowhere else to reasonably be is kind of ridiculous.

It's a little more complex than that, but they might be dicks. I know they were supporters of the Guardians of the Cedars so probably not the kindest fellas. They both can putt.

Yeah, folks that support that kind of cruelty can get fucked. Find better friends.

“… In the Senate, only one Democrat joined most Republicans in opposing the war powers resolution. Senator John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democrat who has frequently broken ranks with his party on issues involving Israel, said he decided to vote against the resolution “simply because I would never want to restrict any future president, Republican or Democrat, to do this kind of military exercise.”

… A sole Republican, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, voted in favor of the measure, citing the arguments made by President James Madison in his early writings encouraging the passage of the Constitution.

“Madison wrote in the Federalist Papers that the executive is the branch most prone to war. Therefore, the Constitution, with studied care, vested that power in the legislature,” Mr. Paul said earlier this week….”

Appreciate you giving us insight to a “niche” of Lebanon and the Lebanese.

Still strikes me as strange that they hate the Palestinians the most.

They’re from Zgharta - way up in Northern Lebanon…….a city that is 98-99% Christian………and they hate and blame Palestinians the most.

SMDH.

So is World War III still on or no? I remember being lambasted here last week for suggesting that Iran wouldn't be able to retaliate meaningfully.

This shows such a poor understanding of the Constitution of which he has sworn to uphold.

Fetterman has been such a huge disappointment, much like Sinema in her single miserable term as a Senator. When she was elected in 2018 I had high hopes for her, given her background and stated political beliefs. Instead she quickly sold out and left the Senate six years later far wealthier and cozier with special interest groups while having turned her back on nearly everything she previously said she supported. Fetterman seems to be going a similar route, and I could easily see him switching parties at some point if he decides to run for reelection.

I'm less concerned with his ideological positioning. It's foolish to think someone who represents PA - which overwhelmingly voted for Trump in 2024 - would be anything short of a right/left center politician. I also understand his "brand" and desire to be viewed as a political outsider and how that also includes being viewed as an outsider relative to the Democratic Party. My point is that war powers are designated to Congress and that's where they should remain regardless of party. Never in our nation's history has there been a situation where an "emergency" demanded absolute immediate mass military action by the executive. It's folly and an abdication of power and authority.

If anything has been shown the last 12 months it's how vulnerable our government is to power creep and overreach. If the Democratic Party ever takes full command of Congress and the Executive Branch - they must initiate legislation limiting the executive branch's power. And if the Supreme Court opts to "weigh in" - then congress + the executive must engage in court reform. We are currently on a very dangerous path and at some point it won't matter which political party holds popular favor.

I refuse to believe that a great majority of GOP political leaders fail to see this crisis any differently.
