Took me a moment to remember the city was the old capital of Assyria and Jonah's Biblical destination.
Yeah but my favorite is “Appointment in Samarra” my grandfather used to say “If I knew where and when I was going to die I would be 100 miles from there that day!”
Living in Chapel Hill of course some professor whose house I was appraising asked me where I thought the market was headed and I told him what my grandfather always said. He said he must have read “Appointment in Samarra”
John O'Hara's debut 1934 novel,
Appointment in Samarra, is a classic of American literature that explores themes of fate, social class, and self-destruction. Set in the fictional town of
Gibbsville, Pennsylvania during the Christmas holidays of 1930, the story follows the rapid social and personal decline of
Julian English, a wealthy car dealer who sabotages his standing in the local elite through a series of impulsive, alcohol-fueled outbursts.
Reminded me of the John Updike “Rabbit Books” I loved during the late 70’s early 80’s with the death of American cars and odd and even days for gas! I suppose my dad’s favorite quote “the only thing new is that which is forgotten!” Still rings loudly to me. Been there done that and didn’t buy the t- shirt!
