Oil surges above $100 a barrel; Trump says 'small price to pay'

Stock market today: Live updates

There were a ton of large dollar >3% out of money SPY put options placed at nearly the same time on Friday.

This was more than before liberation day. We’ll see. Futures are already down 2.3% as posts above show.

And I missed it.

If gas prices continue to rise and the stock market tanks - both of which are likely - he'll TACO out within a few weeks and he and his minions will try desperately to find some way to declare victory and withdraw. But the economic damage will take a good while to fix, and all we'll have done is to damage our credibility with our Middle Eastern allies, get American servicemen and women and foreigners (like 160+ schoolkids) killed for no good reason, and replace a bad ruler with his son, who is even worse and who will almost certainly want and enact revenge on us somewhere down the road with a major terrorist attack somewhere against Americans, perhaps even on our soil. Great going, MAGA!

We will have also weakened Iran. Which appears to be Israel’s strategy. Just bomb Iran every year or so.

“… Hegseth has been on quite a political journey. In 2015, he was dismissing Trump as a draft-dodging “armchair tough guy”. By 2020, he had eaten “some humble pie” and agreed about the folly of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaign. Now he finds himself on the same page as the neoconservatives that Trump used to attack for foolhardy interventionism.

“John Bolton would come in almost every day and urge us to attack Iran,” a senior staffer from Trump’s first term said. “It was easy to talk him [Trump] out of it. You just said: Mr President, do you want to go into an election with oil at $120 a barrel and American boots on the ground?”

… This isn’t about a free and fairer Iran, but about enforcing American rules. This is how it’s being sold to the Trump base, particularly by Hegseth: part of the transition from a rules-based order into a power-based order.

Mara Karlin, who has held national security roles for six secretaries of defence, says there is a notable difference between what the US military leadership is saying and what Hegseth is saying.

“The uniformed military leadership has given us pretty detailed information about its efforts in the war to date, but he’s been pretty cavalier in talking about US fatalities.”…”

Nov 2024 many dem voters said "f this country, let it all burn down". I didn't think the literal burning would starting in Iran.

Everyone is willing to excuse Trump for golfing during a crisis, because even his most ardent supporters realize he will likely do a lot less damage on the golf course than off it. If only he had a competent Cabinet to run the show, we would all be better off is he golfed more.

Not sure why that didn't link, it's there if you click it..
For those who don’t do Instagram, it is a mashup of the “short term pain, long term gain” talking point being used by Trump officials across media hits.
