Yes. What's sad is that it means, in the long-term, Hamas won. The yahoos here who accuse me of celebrating Hamas don't understand this. I think it's horrible that terrorism paid off for them. It will encourage more terrorism. If Israel had been brutal but stopped after three months, Hamas would have lost. IT would have been decimated; lots of Palestinians would have died needlessly; and then the status quo would be maintained. The UK, Canada, France other NATO countries are recognizing Palestine. Bibi has gone from post-Iran strike hero to zero.
But Hamas knew (or at least suspected) that Israel would go apeshit. And that it would, in the end, lead to international sympathy and a renewed visibility to the plight of the Palestinian people. That's what happened.
It's the same way that Osama Bin Laden actually accomplished his objectives. It's really a sad realization. What bin Laden wanted to do was to demonstrate that America's supposed liberal democracy was always a farce rooted primarily in the desire for conquest. And Bush didn't disappoint when he decided to invade Iraq. Ultimately, bin Laden thought that he would be able to cause America to be riven by internal conflicts and end up in some sort of fascist state -- not altogether that different than the House of Saud. Just more hypocritical.
He got what he wanted. This should be a painful realization, which is why most GOPers refuse even to consider it.
