The extent of my experience with Henderson was we went there when I was 10 years-old for a swim meet.

Chapel Hill parents had a little cash; so, for out-of-town dual- or tri-meets, parents would rent us 1-2 buses (nice AIR-CONDITIONED buses; not school activity buses).

We arrived at the Henderson Pool (it was a private pool - Country Club, Exchange Club….something that was all white).

We’re getting off the bus when the Hendersonites see JP and SP……two black kids. Siblings.

They couldn’t swim in Henderson’s pure white water.

So, we got back on the bus. The parents proceed to argue. We could swim so long as JP and SP didn’t use the water fountains or bathrooms.

JP and SP proceeded to pee in the pool each time they swam. And, after helping dump the coaches in the pool after we kicked the rednecks’ butts.

Purchases the rope at Wal Mart, was seen on camera walking towards the tree where his body was found. Sounds like a suicide. Very sad for his family.

Also, the TikToker in question is misinformed (surprise, surprise). Unless you are a celebrity the news doesn’t cover suicides.

Henderson and Henderson County are overwhelmingly Black. As is the Sheriff.

Where did you read he was seen on camera walking toward the tree?

How would one commit suicide with a rope, with no knots as the article stated? Most of the time when one reads of a suicide using a rope they hang themselves. The linked article seems to indicate that he wasn't hanged.

If a suicide that's a horrible way to go.

ABC11 article:

A search warrant showed that Magee was seen on video buying a rope at the Walmart on Cooper Drive in Henderson -- apparently the same rope found with his body.

In that video, Magee used the self-checkout and was wearing the same clothes he was later found in. Twelve minutes later, he was seen entering the Hampton Inn on Ruin Creek Road and then leaving a few minutes later. An associate at the hotel told ABC11 off-camera they didn't have any rooms available that night.

He then drove to Vanco Mill Road where surveillance video showed his truck pulling in and Magee walking away.

Just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, a 911 call led deputies to Magee's body.

With regard to your second question, without wanting to get too graphic you can asphyxiate yourself with a rope with simple body weight, no need to actually hang yourself. You can basically tie it off and lean forward enough to where you lose consciousness and won't regain it.

Thanks, I had only read the one article.

That still seems like a brutal way to die.

More information released today. Magee apparently gave over $200 to a homeless person when leaving Wal-Mart. He was then filmed parking his truck and walking into the woods with an unknown item in his hands. He then returns to the truck, turns it off, and walks back into the woods. Autopsy showed no signs of assault or defensive wounds. Despite all of this information, attorney Lee Merritt still told the media today that Magee was "lynched".

I recall that there was a suicide in The Wire using that method or similar using a doorknob in jail?
D'Angelo Barksdale. Dude had it rough - never wanted to be a bad dude, but when your uncle is Avon ...
