Joe Biden has prostate cancer

I’m a little puzzled… prostate cancer at 82 is not surprising, but having bone mets at diagnosis is surprising (at least for someone who was president of the United States just a few months ago). Hard to believe no one thought to check a PSA at any point.

They really have been. From a medical standpoint, we are fortunate to live in the time we do.
I dunno. From a medical standpoint, I’d like to live 500-1,000 years in the future. But I’ll deal with our comparatively primitive medical treatments the best I can. Not really much choice unless I want to go the Ted Williams head freezing route.

You would think either a routine PSA or digital rectal exam would have picked it up. Occasionally you will have a normal PSA in aggressive prostate cancer.

Colon cancer cost my dad his life at 53 (back in 1997). The advances since then have been amazing.
Plus preventive steps/procedures are given much more attention now from PCP’s to the media to even insurance companies. Sorry to hear you lost your dad that way and so young.

Had my first colonoscopy in 2023 and the doctor was reading my form and saw I lost my mom to cancer. She asked me what type of cancer. I told her it was esophageal cancer. She said it’d be a really good idea for me to get an endoscopy too while I was there. I told her I would if it was covered. She had her nurse manager call my insurance and they said it’s covered. Had both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy during the same procedure. Not sure I’d get a colonoscopy if this was 20 years ago much less have an endoscopy added the day of.

Heart goes out to the Biden’s. It’ll be a difficult road and though he’s lost a step or two, he’s still a tough one.

Hard to "like" this comment, But it's true. Prostate cancer will not be the "cause of death" at the end.
If a person dies of cancer isn’t the cause of death where the cancer started? Certainly prostate cancer in and of itself isn’t fatal (like breast cancer); however the problem with cancer is it spreads. The same would be true of skin cancer.

Prostate cancer absolutely can be fatal. I’ve seen it several times.

Also, I think Center is likely saying the typical presentation of prostate CA advances slowly, and the person dies of heart failure, pneumonia, dementia, etc. long before the CA has spread enough to kill.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. My father lived to be 90. He had his last colonoscopy when he was 84 I think. The doctor told him he wouldn’t need another one because colon cancer was generally not an aggressive cancer and, at his age , he would probably die of something else before colon cancer would kill him.

There is a"story" regarding how could POTUS not get a better diagnosis of cancer that has been there for years. There is a good "public Health " story of how crappy PSA tests are-very shaky dignostic tool
The "story" where endless strings of Physicians talk about a particular life threatening disease for an individual-in this case an XPotus-that story makes me puke.. GEEZ-show some decency

Correct. But my point is made by Healing.
My thinking on this was that most prostate cancer is very treatable if found early enough. One would think that Biden has been under the best doctor's care for several years now and they would have detected it ASAP - And as Healing said, at Biden's age, it's more than likely that he will die of something else before the actual prostate cancer can get him. I was also speaking to the fact of what the actual death certificate will say... likely something else besides "he died of prostate cancer". Mind you, it could possibly say something like "died of complications brought on by prostate cancer."
Either way, I'm sorry for old Joe and I wish him God's speed and my heart goes out to the family and the Nation. Biden served his country well and will go down in history as a great man, and a good President. He may not wind up on the "top ten" list, but I'll bet he'll rank higher on any list than Drumpster.

Let's play "whataboutism" or "bosides now":
“I don’t know what President Biden and his doctor discussed, but I think you are hinting at the other element, which is that President Obama had this test, President Bush had this test. It is a little surprising that the doctor didn’t take it. And if he took it and didn’t report it and it was elevated, that is another case of doctors not being straightforward with us. We’ve had several of them with President Trump, especially around his COVID diagnosis. And if that is true, that would be very troubling.”

I think it's safe to say that Trump's doctors or his "official" doctor's reports both in first term and here lately, are bogus, misleading, or hiding something. I mean if they're going to blatantly lie about the man's weight... they'd definitely hide something else. No?

So I'm playing both sides do it too now - a little "What about trump and his doctors? They have to be misleading too, correct?"

Early detection is the key. Mine was found early and I’m very grateful to my doctors. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers because it’s asymptomatic in its early stages. Eric Idle of Monty Python went in to something else checked. They found he had pancreatic cancer in its very early stages and they were able to successfully treat it.

As an old codger my PSA has been creeping higher for some time. I ignore the PSA and monitor my free PSA score which is a much more reliable indicator. Fortunately, my PSA notwithstanding, my free PSA has been good and has been consistent for years.

What is PSA vs. free PSA

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is an enzyme that binds to proteins in semen and breaks them down.
PSA is produced mainly in your prostate gland and is released into your semen. During ejaculation, some PSA passes into your bloodstream through the rich blood supply of the prostate. Two typesTrusted Source of PSA circulate in your body:
  • Free PSA is PSA that hasn’t bound to any proteins.
  • Bound PSA is PSA that has bound to proteins.
When your PSA is tested, it may be measured two ways. A free PSA test measures only the unbound PSA in your bloodstream. A PSA test measures your total PSA, meaning both your bound and free.

Free PSA test purpose

The free PSA test is sometimes given instead of a biopsy if your PSA levels are slightly elevated. It also may be used to give your doctor an idea of how aggressive the cancer is if your cancer has returned after treatment.
PSA is tested by taking a sample of blood, usually from your arm. The sample will be sent to a laboratory for testing and the results will be given to your doctor.
PSA testing has a number of limitations.
